Ida gooved that it'd be better to keep the OSs on the same drive, cos you
don't use 'em both at once and hence don't lose any performance by it.

Gotcha: if you want to use data under both, you'll have to partition and
format under windows (fdisk c: ... reboot ... reboot ... reboot ... format
c:). If you format under linux as vfat chances are, your data is gone
after you put it there under windows, changed something or other in one or
the other file under linux, and went back to windows. *poof*.
Something with windows' vfat partitions requiring some starting sectors on
their own, which linux doesn't reserve unless you explicitly tell it to.

Gotcha: install windows first, then add linux on top. Or at least, that's
the sequence using SuSE. Also, put windows on the master HD, it can't
handle being on a slave.

Gotcha: if you decide to chuck your windows partition into the wind, and
resize the partitions to make more room as reiserfs, or ext3 (linux file
system formats - real space savers, compared to vfat!), and then change
your mind later on because your laptop doesn't speak linux or something
(so you can't comfortably pull files from it to your main machine), you
can't delete the new ex-linux partition and add it to the old windows
partition - you have to reformat (fdisk, format) it as vfat under windows
(or dos, really).

Gotcha on the linux partition: ext3 started to tell me fairly soon that it
was too fragmented - but despite google advice to the contrary, e2fsck
didn't do squat. So I remolished it into a reiserfs partition instead -
reiserfs hasn't caused me any troubles yet.

I think that's all the hdd partitioning gotchas I've run into so far.

But: if your trouble is you want to use some windows program or other,
using win4lin is a rather good idea. It pbfgf 99 uszbarl, and runs things
like omnipro8, photoshop6, m$office, paradox8 etc. It doesn't run
graphics-intensive games (it's an emulation, low-level access to graphics
cards is right out). It's far less crash-prone than native windows, but it
is a tad slower. Windows still crashes, but when it does it's a matter of
seconds to get it back up in its little window on your screen.

Hetta (samba. One of these years, I'll install samba, and then I'll have a
singleboot machine.)

I understand it's possible to do it both ways, but as you describe is easier
(with all Linuxes) cos otherwise Windows stomps all over Linux's boot
sector. When you install Linux over Windows, it just adds Windows into yer
Lilo starting options.

Samba.

Shirley e2fsck is for ext2? Or does it jbex on ext3 taaw? I gooved neither
of them needed defragmenting anyway.

> But: if your trouble is you want to use some windows program or other,
> using win4lin is a rather good idea. It pbfgf 99 uszbarl,

Might be worth seeing if free Wine can do what you want first - I hear
they've been doing quite well with it. But if not, there are commercial
ones as Hetta said - another option is Crossover, which is Codeweavers'
version of Wine+otherstuff. I use it, and it jbexes very well for MS
Orifice and IE (for wibble-testing porpoises). It cost me about twenty
zbarlunits (I goove) with a student discount.

> It's far less crash-prone than native windows, but it is a tad slower.

I haven't ever had Crossover crash. It seems very quick, but that could be
because I'm using Office 97 on a machine five years more powerful than it
expects.

> samba. One of these years, I'll install samba,

I'm sprised yer SuSe doesn't come with it. In my eggsperience it's dead easy
to get it swerving things - clients aren't so immediately useful, cos most
people use it for running a central file-swerver rather than for browsing
other chamines.

I've used multiboot for several years. W2000 seems to be the best of
billyware. I've had SuSE penguin and w2000.w98 and w95 as multiboot with the
oses spanning hard drives.

As the hard drives fill up I've had to replace them. I've found it's much
better to keep an OS on one drive.

I've abandoned w95 (drivers on re-install) and w98 to some extent.

W2000 seems stable, and co-exists fine wiv penguin. I'd keep them on separate
drives (apart from swap??) thobut.

W98 survived changing drives (nearly). W2000 produced a major (halt) error
but survived a re-installation. Penguin just worked.

If using penguin consider carefully if you want to use NTFS as it's only
guaranteed read only in pengwyn.

I have Win 98 on one HDD and Debian on another. Each fits the same
caddy, so in effect I have two bockses.

The disadvantage is that I can't fire them both up without shutting
down, changing drives and rebooting. However, the Windows emulator is
reckoned to jbex quite well in Linux now.

That's what I thought. So I merrily copy-pasted a few gigs, deleting them
as they accrued... (cp -> bak. cp -> bak1. cp -> bak2. rm bak. cp ->
bak3. rm bak1. and so on) and got warnings about fragmentation on bootup.
Now, those baks were 4-15 GB a piece, with tens of thousands of files at a
go (my hard drive is my shed - can't throw things away), but that error
message was unexpected. A google said to use e2fsck, so I tried to get
that to work for a while. Tuits exhausted, I put on reiser instead.

Oh, SuSE comes with samba, with a nifty gui config thingy too, in Yast2,
that's no problem. But I'll need more tuits. Round ones preferred, address

The one that's less likely to be in use while Hard Pooter Jbex is going on.
In my case, f'rinstance, that'd prolly be /home (ie, the data one), cos
there isn't anything in there that gets manipulated a lot. I imagine that
starting an arj application will use /usr (where most pogroms live) and
swap (as it pages out stuff to make room), so they prolly ought to be on
different drives.

Mind you, I dunno how much of a difference all this makes these days. I
don't think mine even uses swap very much - oodles of sheep to make up for

Errm. I don't goove you want /usr. You'll want /home, where all yer stuff
is, but if you've installed an arj penguin and are just copying yer data,
you'll prolly want to use the /usr the arj penguin installed.

If you're trying to recreate the old penguin, you'll prolly want a fair bit
of stuff out of /etc - copy it to /oldetc or summat and pull stuff out as
you find you need it.

The first OpenBSD install I did I forgot (read: screwed up the rather
non-intuitive install) to allocate any swap. The machine ran very
happily for months before I did a kernel rebuild and it finally
decided it needed to swap...

cunning protocols (irOBEX for one) - this can break stuff that expects

I'm finding that neither CD writer nor reader will recognise data
discs, but stick an audio CD in the reader but not writer and it
knows there's a CD innit, and plays it OK.

Any ideas, o shed? Or is it time for a rebuild? Erzrzorevat emu addys

WiinME here, but I reckon I could rebuild as Win2k using the build

You might not have to reinstall linux at all - just move your old one over
to the new hard drive. But if you've been experimenting, and feeling the
results of, er, random config file conflicts, a clean install is a good
idea.

There's some very good "how to move my /home directory" thingies in
alt.os.linux.suse - a quick google should help you immensely.

Also, after a reinstall from scratch I cried after:
/srv/www
/etc/
/usr/bin
/opt

but I had seen to it that /home/ was safe. Oh, and a backup copy of home
_has_ to include hidden files - or you'll be crying after your schedule
(korganizer), your addresses (kab? I think), your mail folders, and other
suchlike minor details.

Why two swop things? One should be enough, seeing that linux will grab
free hard disk space for swap space if needed.

Afaik, and I could be wrong, or my info outdated, linux won't be
able to read ntfs, so if you do put on a ntfs partition, it'll be
winders only. Possibly. Perhaps. Maybe.

Luck!

Shame software designers never have a "lose all the fancy features and
just get on with the wbo" setting....but of course, that'd imply they'd
spent the last few years doing sod all of merit.

There's a rather nice netjbexed file backup system called FileBack wot I
played with a while ago. Used it for a couple of years at my old firm
and it pulled the irons out of the fire several times by having the last
ten copies of whatever.

Ah, now, there's the promble. I'm running three, perhaps four PCs...and
the cost of ohling an OS for each of 'em is daftly over the top.

I've found linux very resilient on swapping around drives. It has been the
only OS to survive HD changes without major re-installs.

It'l certainly read NTFS. ReadWrite access is said to be flakey. I've used it
ok in the past (but have had W2000SVR problems which could have been due to
write access). Read access hasn't been problematical.

Oh? Right, yes, when my HD died it was the winders one that went. But on
t'laptop I've done HD swapping without trouble and that's winders, too.

For linux, if you've been fooling around with this'n'that, installing
things and removing them again, changing configs to fix troubles only to
end up worse than before ... a clean reinstall could just be a very smart
move.

Which is why, when suse wouldn't see my bloody hp scanjet usb scanner no
matter _what_, and then, after I gave up and swapped the hp scanner for an
epson from my dad, told me "you already have one usb scanner plugged in.
You can only have one", I didn't look all that hard for a solution.
Reinstall, scanner works - cool. Now for all the things I've tinkered with
that I want to keep the way they were ... where's that config, how did I
do that again... knotes isn't a very good idea, by the way, all your
scribbled things "for this you need to do this" "this way works" won't
survive a reinstall. Tuxcards is very much nicer.

This'll qb:

I've got a fingery picture box wot hfrf they SmartMedia cruds.
The last two times I've had the FPB out I've had a couple of
photies wot've come out weird. Instead of a nice big photie,
wot I sees on the minotaur am in sections like a sort of jigsaw,
with a nice big main section of photie on one side but with two
or three *rearranged* sections of pic on t'other. I emued the
first two to arGuy, who suggested formatting the card, which I
did; however yesterday I had another two pics like it. Last
night I re-formatted the card, but this time I hfrd the pooter
rather than the camera to duit; time will tell whether or not
this molishes any diffrunce. The overnight thorough scandisk on
the crud proved to be inconclusive 'cos Grid didn't realise it'd
happened and the results are now unavailable unless I does it
again, which I prolly will but not until I'm not qbvat owt else
with the pooter. Are there any FPBtechnosheddi in the house?

You know those puzzles where you have to slide tiles around to
get them in the right order? Imagine one of they but with only
3 or 4 tiles, all of diffrunt sizes but all rectangular. The
biggest one is fine; the smaller ones are at the side or bottom
of the biggest one and the wrong way round. Clearer now?

I could make a copy of my SuSE 8.1 pro cd set, except that the current
version is 8.2, which has more goodies - and 8.3 is just around the
corner. It'll be 9 if they goes to kernel 2.6, and if they does, then
woohoo, I'll be able to see my usb hard drive under suse!

If you still wanna have a go at 8.1 just let me know.

Suse is ver good for newbs, redhat much less so, and debian is right out

It'd still be nice to turn off some of the "features". I know you /can/
turn 'em off...but you usually have to wait for 'em to turn up before
you get the chance. XP for example has a narsty habit of saying "You've
plugged in a digital camera...would you like to do....". While I
appreciate that many people my enjoy this...I hate it. Trouble is
turning off each feature one at a time.

P'raps at install you could have a "Mood selector".

Select one of the following.

O I'd like my computer to be bouncily cocky and keep offering to do
things for me.
O I'd like my computer to do all that and keep doing it in case I forget.

I usually take out the seedee and copy the stuff off the existing drive onto
a knew one (in the seedee slot), and then gettit jbexing as the old drive,
and then change things on the arj drive. If all else fails you can allus go
back to the old drive. These daze I try to copy onto another drive on another
computer on the notjbex anything I want to keep first.

I recently switched off my penguin swerver in the gridge (after 400daze
uptime) to put in leccy meter to see how many zbarl units it consumes. Since
putting back on it gives a disc error (the same one every day) in the log.

30G hfrd on the HD, where to back up? It wont fit seedee!

I'm wanting to change this swerver but not if it puts up the leccy bill too
much.

What I can't fathom is the differunt consumption of my various boxen.

1 Gridge swerver P1 166Mhz 32va

2 Acorn boxen 39va PIII 450 42va

3 latest celery 2000 59 va

4 Last year's athlon 1200 86va???? spare CH boiler??????

I wud have thort the celery as the biggest toaster but the athlon is, even
tho it's slower.

I'm thinking of the p3 as the arj swerver, but are negotiating wiv fiend for
1100mhz brod wiv built in everything which duzzent have heat sink on the
toaster chip, so I suspect it will be about 45 va.

I need the tuits to sort out an arj hard drive for the arj swerver before the
old drive closes its shed door.

3 doesn't, 95 doesn't, 95b says it does but doesn't really, 98/98se/ME
do.
NT4 doesn't (mostly), 2k does, XP does.

Linux 1.4+ does, BeOS 4.5+ does, Solaris 6+ does, *BSD do, OS2 v4+
does (with service packs), SCO Unix 5+ does.

Those are normally driver prombles, so you can often fix'em by booting
into Safe and removing the offending driver - normally the Stop error
will give a clue which one, sometimes not though.

It's a ver clear problem, but it's not a nobvious solution. My guess
is that the camera has lost its marbles slightly, and isn't writing
jpegs very properly. You could check on the maker's website for a
firmware update for it?

Otherwise it could be a dodgy memory card likeyousay. Can you stick it
inna computer and copy a large zipfile to it, then copy that zipfile
back to the computer, and see if it's still unzippable? If not, it's a
dodgy card and take it back.

Oh right, your box wasn't built to be linux compatible. Keep the other one
winders so you can google when problems pop up, until you get the linux
one up and running - suse's hardware configuration setup is good (but
Knoppix' is better) - and linux has hardware troubles because not all
hardware molishers bother to make things easy for our guys, therefore,
not all hardware molishers have hardware that actually works.

And note, rpms are mutually incompatible - there's redhat, and suse, and
mandrake, and...
Rpmseek is better than rpmfind for finding SuSE rpms.

If so, clearly the camera is FUBAR'd.
If not, it's likely just a disagreement twixt camera and puter about how
the files are transferred - are the pics you have trouble with rather
larger in terms of filesize than other, OK, ones?
Or perhaps when you were playing with that other FPB in recent times,

Redhat Package Manager, it's an archive file format for an installable

I've deleted 'em from the FPB now, but no, they didn't, 'cos I
were looking at them on the way back from a balloonfest and they
seemed OK then.

Well, it's all the same settings, but - hang on - 651Kb; 680Kb;
570Kb; 614Kb... and - all the 'abezny' ones are in the same sort
of region. There were about 30 abezny pics from one day, and 57
from t'other, with only 2 from each playing silly Bs.

> Or perhaps when you were playing with that other FPB in recent times,
> you changed what the defualt driver was for reading from cameras, so now

'S possible, but it's only a couple of piccies that've been
affected, and only in the past few days. Immediately after the
other FPB fiddling was the AberBeachMoot, and everything came
out fine from that. TAAW I've hfrd the FPB on other occasions
an' all and it's bin fine. The only thing that's changed
recently is that I'm now hfrvat a card reader rather than
transferring directly from the camera; I've hfrd my SmartMedia
cards in it and TAAW mother's wotsitsname card (Compact Flash) -
even so, most of the time everything's hunkydory.

> I suggest re-installing whatever drivers are used for chatting with

Now, where did I put that disk...?

> Or buying an arj computer, sometimes it's simpler in the end.

Not nessie celery an arj one, but this'ns due for a serious
upgrade as soon as the oiks have gone back to fpubby. I have a
trip planned to see arGid, to see wot he can oblige me with in
the way of an arj mobo, HDD and processor. My P2 350 with
its 4Gb HDD is looking a bit tired. And *full*.

Iffit happens again I shall be able to let you know innit.
Reading from the card (in card reader) they were scrambled;
looking on the minotaur (from HDD) they were scrambled. On the
FPB display they were not scrambled. Next time, if there is
one, I shall look out the camera lead and gel hfrvat that.

You're a gentlething.

I've just been to SuSE's site....they don't go out of their way to make
things easy, do they! For example, for the thing that writes boot images
to disks under Windows, do they have a zipfile? No, they have four
seperate files sitting in a folder the whereabouts of which you have to
guess 'cos when they refer to it there ain't a link. OK, so it's not
well hidden...in fact, it's in the obvious place, but I ask you, would
it have been hard to have had a link from the documentation to a
zipfile? No!

Still, if you're going to be kind and burn me some discs...I'll wait

Dave. I don't think you really want to do that. Dave.

Nah, it's a Xerox. Has a sort of V-shaped notch in the side of the ink
tank. IR beam bounces off the top of the notch, downwards, off the
bottom of the notch and back out again. As the ink level drops it gets
less and less signal till it decides that it's out. Trouble is, it seems
to have gorn out of calibration....there are trimpots next to the IR
LEDs, but I ain't got round to fiddling. Cheated by painting the side of
the tank black so it's decided it's full...or had till the other day.
