Know how you feel, but it is easier now than 1969, when we became stuck
between the roof and the towpath. It took 5 or 6 beefy men, who had
worked their way from the North portal, along what remained of the
towpath, to come on board, to sink us down low enough to continue.
I had visions of the boat lifting the brick arch and collapsing the
whole roof on us.
It is easier now, that they have removed the towpath and done some
repair work on the roof.

Unfortunately the best canalside pub (The Bird in Hand) is no more. It
was between bridge 89 and 87, if I remember rightly. Bridge 88 was a
swing bridge, I think, and its remains were still lying around in 1969.
The last time that I visited it was in 1979 or 80, when Emmy insisted
that we sit in the lounge, as my girlfriend was a Lady. The Lounge
really was a lounge, a Sunday best room.
There is a mention and photograph here:

I do not remember her husband, but Emmy was quite a character. She was
always made up like a china doll, but wearing a wrap-around and
slippers.
