Pancakes on valentines day - Easter is early this year so Shrove
Tuesday falls on the same day as Valentines.

So pancakes instead of treating her to a slapup meal.

Or take her to a dimly lit restaurant, where she can wear pancake makeup[1].

[1] Sometimes called "slap" - so that fits.

Probably find one at the Shrift shop.

While you are down there, see if you can get me a shrift which is NOT
short.

Dunno. I shrifted them shright as they were not shright for me.

Which reminds me of what was probably an urban myff.

My mother told me of a probationer nurse (not my mother, she said). The
probationer was on her first night shift on a geriatric ward and was
told, by the staff nurse, to collect all the false teeth and clean them.
She took a large bucket round to each bed and collected all the pairs of
false teeth. Of course they were collected unlabelled!

It took the probationer until the middle of the following day to match
the sets of teeth and then match them to their owners.

IRTA Ship Ha'penny. Used to collect those for charity when I was a boy
sprout. I have no idea why we collected the ha'pennies with ships on the
back - perhaps it was considered more of a challenge to sort those
particular coins out of a bucket-load of ha'pennies.

There is Maundy money, King Brian will be doling it out
this year:

https://britanniacoincompany.com/blog/royal-maundy-coins-guide/
King Charles III First Maundy Coins

On 6 April 2023, King Charles will issue Maundy Money as King for
the first time. The ceremony will take place at York Minster.

In a statement, Buckingham Palace said:

'During the service, His Majesty will present 74 men and 74
women (signifying the age of the monarch) with the Maundy Money
to thank them for their outstanding Christian service and for
making a difference to the lives of people in their local
communities. Recipients are selected from Church of England
dioceses across the country, and Anglican and Ecumenical partners
across the UK.

‘The King will present each recipient with two purses: one
red and one white. The white purse will contain a set of
specially minted silver Maundy coins equivalent in value to the
age of the monarch. The red purse will contain two commemorative
coins, symbolising the Sovereign's historic gift of food and
clothing. This year, one will celebrate His Majesty’s forthcoming
75th birthday and the other will commemorate the 75th anniversary
of the Windrush Generation.'

King Charles already has experience with the Maundy Thursday
ceremony as he deputised for his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, in
2022. It was the first time since 1970 that the Queen had missed
the service. Covid-19 restrictions precluded holding Royal Maundy
ceremonies in the previous two years so the last time that Her
Majesty personally distributed Maundy Money was in 2019 at St
George's Chapel, Windsor Castle. Over her long reign, the late
Queen gave out coins at every Anglican cathedral in England.

Was there any other sort? - or was it just an easy means of separating
English coinage from (eg) Francs?
I suspect it had more to do with honing observation skills!

Yes. Having just gurgled it I see that most of the coins had Brittania on
the back.

You could be right. We nippers were not told that of course, and I never
questoned it until now.

In context that phrase "their outstanding Christian service" is possibly
misleading.

Said at Matins and Evensong:

ALMIGHTY and most merciful Father;
We have erred, and strayed from Thy ways like lost sheep.
We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts.
We have offended against Thy holy laws.
We have left undone those things which we ought to have done;
And we have done those things which we ought not to have done;
And there is no health in us.
But Thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders.
Spare thou them, O God, which confess their faults.
Restore thou them that are penitent; According to Thy promises
declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord.
And grant, O most merciful Father, for His sake; That we may
hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, To the glory of Thy
Holy Name. Amen

and at Holy Communion:

ALMIGHTY God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

Maker of all things, judge of all men;
We acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness,
Which we, from time to time, most grievously have committed,
By thought, word, and deed,
Against thy Divine Majesty,
Provoking most justly Thy wrath and indignation against us.
We do earnestly repent,
And are heartily sorry for these our misdoings;
The remembrance of them is grievous unto us;
The burden of them is intolerable.
Have mercy upon us,
Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father;
For Thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ's sake,
Forgive us all that is past;
And grant that we may ever hereafter
Serve and please Thee in newness of life,
To the honour and glory of Thy Name;
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

These are followed by an absolution, pronounced by the priest.

I do not believe in any of this, but it was drummed into me when I was
an anklebiter.
