Having exhaused our supply of the small CO2
cannisters for the small/emergency blobs, I now
find they are about £2.50 each in a dive shop!

I believe cyclists use them sometimes and get
equally ripped off.

Does anyone know of an alternative source for
these items.

There's a picture of one here...

if you're not sure what I'm on about.

TIA

Steve

Not sure, but they look about the same size as CO2 cartridges for some air
pistols.
Try gun/angling shops

Have you tried sparklets - the DIY fizzy drinks? They may not be the same,
but CO2 is CO2. I believe they are rechargeable. Anyway, why CO2? Why not
just use air from your cylinder, whether just exhaled or otherwise? It's
even more buoyant!

Haven't cyclists got arms and pumps these days?

No wonder they're expensive you carrot crunching gimp. They come with a posh
ruler!

tsk, just use the plain ones ;)

Not quite along the same lines as Ken, but if you're more technically minded
you could probably rig up something that you could stick on your cylinder
with an attachment for the little bottle and fill it that way? Only thing
is it doesn't seem to have a valve so not sure how they'd keep the air
in...?

Hi Steve.

I always though that they were the same as used in the SodaStream fizzy
drink maker ( they sell the cartridges in Robert Dyas).

Worth a look.

Best regards,

Tony & Linda.

Hope to see you & Megan later this year.

Replying to the the various posts;

Deep Reset: Yes, they do look like the air pistol ones, thanks
for the suggestion. Sadly, air gun users seem to be targets
[sic] for ripping off just as we and the cyclists are.

Ken: I am not concerned whether it's CO2 or not. It's just
uncommon to find air-filled ones, and I'm certainly not looking
for He ones!

David: You're right about the cylinder not having a valve. Plus, I
don't think these cylinders would take 230bar!! I don't believe
refilling them is an option.

Zak: Leave it, fat boy!

Tony: A soda stream with a 9cm cartridge would be a comedy item
indeed. Perchance enough for one G&T. Who is Bob Dyas anyway?

Cheers dudes,

S

p.s. The best price I have found so far is 3 for a fiver at wiggle.co.uk
I had kind of thought they might be 10 for a quid, but there you go!!

Smaller if I remember correctly and perhaps what Tony meant were the C02
gas cartridges you used to be able to get for 'soda syphons' rather than
"sodastreams" - these are/were flask sized dispensers that you inserted
a one time co2 cylinder into - each cylinder being good for maybe a pint
of fizzy water. On inserting into the dispenser a small cap cut a hole
in the top of the cylinder.

This sort of thing -

10 cylinders for $6 (alas no pics)

Ah here you go:

machine your own thread in the end!

Something along the lines of the filling whip for the (dare I say it?) Spare
Air?

Oh nooooo! I said Spare Air! Oh blinkin' 'ell! We'll have a flamin' war now!
What have I done?

That's exactly what I originally meant, not the Soda Stream cartridges which
are considerably larger (and are sold as an exchange item).

Sorry for the confusion.

BTW, Robert Dyas is a bloke with a lot of high street hardware shops :-))

Steve, I think these cartridges were designed in the US as they use a
similar system to a 'Burst Disk' :-)

now that isn't what you're after but I recall on a previous trip to
decathlon Nott'm' before Xmas I saw replacement packs of CO2 cylinders
in the bike section (couldn't find them on the website, might be worth a
call to the shop though).

Bare in mind it was more than 3 months ago and I didn't have a good look
I just kinda noticed them in passing as I was hunting for an Xmas
pressie for my brother but IIRC they were in 6 packs and the price was
in the order of £5-10 ish.

Soda syphon bottles won't work as they have a plain end. The DSMB ones
are threaded (rather usefully 3/8" UNF so ideal for holding a reg when
servicing).
