Can you dive in Ladybower resevoire?

if so do you need the nod from a warden?
what are the conditions like?
or is it totally out of order?

You do need permission to dive in Ladybower.
Currently there is a lot of construction work being carried out above and
below water so I wouldn't think that you'd get in. If you did, the
conditions are going to be bad. You'll need to talk to North West Water I
think.

I agree that the conditions won't be good - the water is full of peat and a
kind of gravy-brown colour! It's actually Severn-Trent Water that you'd need to
contact.

Yes, they flooded Derwent and Ashopton villages in (I think) the 20's/30's. The
spire of Derwent church stuck up out of the reservoir for a while, until they
dynamited it. The remains of Derwent village often appear when the water levels
are very low, and there's little left now, just some rubble and lots of tree
trunks!

Yes you can dive in Ladybower reservoir.
You can get a dive permit by applying to the DARSAC, the Derbyshire
Association of Sub Aqua Clubs, who volunteered to manage the issuing of
permits to sub aqua clubs.

Email me directly if you would like a contact phone number.

Paul,

I don't know to many details about the villages/diving in Ladybower. I
have never dived it myself. All I have heard is that the visibility is
often quite poor but can occasionally be good. There are areas where you
can dive on some of the flooded buildings. The Derbyshire Association
should be able to give you more details.

I haven't dived in Ladybower, but have researched the story of the reservoir.
Derwent village would not be very deep - probably 10-15 metres - but there's
hardly anything left. Ashopton village is beneath the big road bridge and would
be deeper - and I'm not sure what remains are there. Various other smaller
settlements were submerged too, and may have intact buildings.

Hi Ged,

Just out of curiosity, what are the conditions like and what sort of
depths are we talking about?

Regards,
Rudy.
