An instructor and two trainees were diving in the Sound of Kerrera nr Oban
when they were forced down to 140ft, presumably by a strong downcurrent.
The instructor and one trainee made it to the surface, the other trainee was
found by local divers a short time later. The two survivors were suffering
dc o sickness.

From what we gather they were diving the Breda which is in Ardmucknish Bay
not the Kerrera Sound.
Reports in the Sunday mail suggested they were dragged down by currents,
however the wreck and the area is totally sheltered and not tidal let alone
strong enough to pin somebody down.
17 years old!
Such a waste!

Girl drowns in diving accident
By Matt Born
A 17-YEAR-OLD girl has drowned while being taught to dive off Scotland.
Julia Brandrith, of North Shields, Tyne and Wear, who would have been 18
tomorrow, died on Saturday while deep-water diving with a school friend and
an instructor in the Sound of Kerrara, near Oban, Argyllshire.
The three are believed to have got into trouble soon after entering the
water at low tide. They had just begun their training session on an
underwater cliff, at a depth of 88ft, when the tide began to rise, creating
a strong current which dragged the divers down.
Despite the instructor's efforts to bring all three to the surface, he was
unable to save Miss Brandrith. Oban coastguard was alerted and her body was
found in the water by an RAF helicopter crew. She was pronounced dead at the
scene.
Miss Brandrith attended King's School, Tynemouth, North Tyneside, where she
was studying for her A-levels. She had won a place at Edinburgh University.

We ran into some surprisingly nasty - and sudden - currents around
Maiden Island on the Sunday afternoon. Fortunately nobody had any
serious problems though one pair did end up surfacing quite a distance
off after being caught in it.
Fortunately we had two boats on site and do all OW training at that
level 1:1.

That is a particularly upsetting one. She would have been joining us
next year :-<!

We were at Ganavan all that day and there was definitely no helicopter
activity towards the Breda though there was quite a lot to the south
towards Oban and Kerrera,
Geoff.
