Relum produce a very good range of 12oz canvas patrol tents, which
includes a 12' model, nearly identical to the Stormhaven
They all have quite a nice feature, in that there is dutch lacing
where the door joins the side wall, allowing much tidier brailing
of the tent.

Our group recently replaced our patrol tents with 'Patrol 12' tents
from Scout Shops.
they were the cheapest we found and they are excellent. We bought
4 together (raised the money over a year or so!) and got a discout.
We are very happy with them, they look like lasting for plenty of
camps.

They were only about UKP175 each including flysheet and groundsheet.
The downside at 14' x 14' is that Scouts need a bit of help to get them
up. However, once up there is loads of space inside(we usually just
groundsheet half of the tent) and they stay cool and dark in the summer.
The flysheets also make excellent dining shelters.

Yes, we use them too. In winter we've even pitched smaller tents inside
them.
The cost is now around 230 ukp.
The only downside is that you can't tell when it's light outside.

Try and find manufacturers rather than "catalog" companies. I know of
quite a few groups that have brought straight from the manufacturer the
same stuff Cotswold has in its catalog for a lot less.
Bradford seem to be quite good, there quality of workmanship is of good
(from what I've seen of Mess tentage), and they have no hidden extra
costs - carriage, VAT (included), rot/fire proofing (they seem to come
as standard) so that what you see in the Catalog is what you pay, and
they're prompt and sending stuff out, (although we did get our mess tent
delivered to Amikaro as the "dead-line" drifted, but it saved us lugging
it 300 miles south!)

Hello Kevin,
My Group are also looking to buy new Patrol Tents, but really want
to know whether these cheaper brands such as Scout Shops, Cotswold
will stand up to the wear and tear put on them by the young people.
I have used Icelandics lots in the past, and they are excellent and
will last. I have also had some experience with the Scout Shop ones
which are reasonable, but certainly do not last as long. They would
seem to get damaged around the eyelets quicker - of course a good
QM spotting problems as they occur and fixing them is essential.
So Opinions:
Icelandics:
- Expensive
- Well Made
9/10
Stormhavens:
- Expensive
?/10
Cotswold:
-
?/10
Scout Shops:
- Prone to wear / ripping around eyelets
4/10
Bradford:
-
?/10
Any Other Opinions?

We have a mix of Icelandic, Stormhaven and ex-army tents. Oddly enough
nearly all the same age and same usage. The army tents will last
perhaps one more camp, the icelandics two or three. No similar
problems on the stormhavens. We dont have any others, but we do feel
that the performance of the stormhavens has outweighed the original
purchase cost.

By the same token, my group has Icelandics two of which are ancient and
were bought just as Noah left the Ark (or so it seems!). They are
suffering a bit through their great age but we seem to have given them a
new lease of life by buying flysheets for them. They still do a job.
On the other hand, we bought a couple of Downsman patrol tents a few
years back and they are not very good at all. They are metal poled and
they bend alarmingly and quickly! We tend not to use them but favour the
very old Icelandics with new(ish) flysheets.
I should also add that we have two newer Icelandics as well.

I don't think you've been reading the same text as I, Bill. Two MORE
camps Chris said. Our Group back in ye Olden Days had Icelandics and
some other similar tents, some of which were pre-war. These were
still being used into the 'seventies.
I agree with a previous poster who said that 9 oz was false economy
- however, if the devil drives - - -

Very good point.
I haven't got a contact for a manufacturer, but I do know that a few
years ago a few groups in Bristol West district got together and had
tents manufactured to their own spec. If you get in touch with Bill
Loach , AGSL of the 26th Bristol (I don't have his number but kevin
should be able to find it easily enough) he might be able to point
you at a good manufacturer.
When I was a scout back in the late '60s with the 227th Bristol, we had
patrol tents that had been made for us by a local firm some 25 YEARS
previously in heavy duty canvas to obviate the need for fly sheets.
Thery were still going strong some ten years after (60's rock band?) I
believe. You get what you pay for in tentage!
