My days as a Scout were spent in Wallasey, Wirral. I'm the same age as
Amanda, but have never met her, or even heard of her until this

Fine by me
Age 58
Did my Scouting in the Isle of Man.
8th Douglas Wolf Cubs,
10th Douglas Sea Scouts and Senior Scouts - All a long time ago
Now live in Cornwall
My two sons went up through the movement,
Wife became Cub leader I helped her with her Camps and stuff.
(Cub camp always coincides with our wedding anniversary for some
reason?).
Became VSL because I was asked - was for 8 years, also 3 years
GSL/GSL(acting).
Did have dinghy sailing authorisation but haven't got the paper work to
renew it in these new 'enlightened' times.
Fell out with DC in a big way and had warrant removed - See thread
'Comic Relief 250 quid on offer' for more details.
Now have an appointment as an instructor with another County.
Have a good knowledge of Scouting skills, DIY and building skills.
Special interest in knots. Member of the IGKT.
Tend to campaign a lot about the rights of kids to have the same
freedoms their parents had on the grounds that statistically the world
is no more dangerous now than it was then. Constantly fight against
cotton wool and red tape and believe that Scouting has no future if the
fight is lost. Unfortunately as of this week I believe it is.
I lack self confidence. Totally useless at remembering peoples names.
Have no discernible ego and no fashion sense. Have a good sense of
humour (not shared by my ex DC). A tendency to bore people as I do go on
about things I think are important.
Play the Guitar.
Interest in motorbikes.
Profession - Electronics

assistant Cub Leader in September, 1993, then when the Akela left (it must
have been something I said), took over the Pack in September, 1994. Have
been with Pythons ever since, although I regularly threaten to resign
whenever *parents, boys, leaders, committee, wife, children and Uncle Tom
Cobley and all upset me (*take your pick). Its normally something I have
done or said, or I get on my high horse about something (at this moment its
golfers who insist in going out in the Countryside to play golf, when
everybody else cancels their outside activities). See, I've upset somebody
else!!!

What a camp that Discovery 89/ Jamboree Cymru 89 was! I was there on the
activities team and ended up with Abingdon Venture Rescue. What were you
doing there? Did we happen to bump into each other? I was one of the two
who were going to be dropped off the abseil tower in a Neilson stretcher as
an initiation into AVR (for some reason they stopped once I was in the
stretcher). Hmm, what else did I do there, oh ye get all the keys to teh
park gates, insist the landy continued with a flat tyre until we found the
Finish Patrol with Hypothermia, used teh same landy to move the totem pole
and of course get in the front door to see Stagecoach perform the Rocky
Horror Show. yes that was definitely a good camp!

No, I haven't been quiet that long. I stopped accessing the newsgroup
once my brief spell in Scouting finished, mainly because I couldn't
cope with the disappointment. Had 3 1/2 years of clinical depression

Glad to find former friends still around and hoping that what I know

In 1987, offered to help very occasionally at Beavers (a section
totally unknown to me) at 2nd Kirkham (St. Michael's) which planned
to set up such a section, as without it some Groups were facing
falling memberships. My son was just Beaver age then. Week later
got the telephone call stating that I had expressed interest in
setting up the section. Despite my correcting the caller,
ended up co-founding the section a month later.
Have stayed with it ever since.

oldie...@argonet.co.uk - Bill Oldroyd, SL, 1st Tadcaster, Wetherby District.
We use an Acorn StrongARM RiscPC and we live in Tadcaster, UK.
Now I can safely enter this game, and if I do so today, I can still say
I am only 50.
I was never a Cub or Scout, but was in St John Ambulance from Age 8 to
40, including 15 years as an Instructor, and 12 as A Divisional Officer.
Attended lots of interesting things, especially as based in Hammersmith
for most of the time - with the White City, BBC places and the Odeon
(now the Labbatts Appollo) with all the stage shows etc.
I was one of the first Computer Science students in the country, and
have worked in IT since then (it wasn't called IT then) including for
the College where I studied, the University of London (including the
processing of O and A level') The Post Office (counters Project) Reed
Personnel and working for myself.
I am currently ICT and Schools Support Manager for our LEA.
Both my wife and I worked with disabled people before our son with
Down's was born. Our second son is now 17, and in a VSU - with are in
three different Groups, in three different Districts, and will all be
going to Kandersteg in August as part of the GLMW expedition.
Our son joined Beavers, and my wife became a ACSL and myself an AGSL in
the same Group - my first visit to K was in 1994 when I organised a trip
there for 18 in that Group. When the County went in 1996, I was the head
of programmes team.
Our son was awarded a Chief Scouts Commendation in 1994 for saving a
boys life, and moved to his new group (3rd Kenton) shortly after. As a
leader myself, I would say his group is one of the best in our county -
it has certainly helped him and his peer group over a situation that is
all too often glibly referred to on this ng.
He went to Chile in 1998 (one of seven from his group) and hopes to be
selected to go to thailand on the IST - but hasn't heard anything back
after applying yet.
In 1995, I moved to be GSL of one Group and Acting GSL of another -
whrere I had been asked to see if the Group was worth trying to save -
it had four Cubs and 1 leader.
It has been worth the effort, as it now has three viable sections, and I
invested my new BSL last week at a wide game, so I am no longer the
warrnated leader with Beavers. I currently run the Troop. The group is
mixed, and by and large are a great bunch of kids - they don't come from
well-off families.
I don't subscribe the the 'he'll never make a Scout he's a wimp' school
of leadership - for a start he may be a she - as the Distrrict team
always get fed up with me adding 'and girls' every time someone says
'the boys will like that'
I believe that if we can get a YP to do two things that THEY didn't
think they could do, we have changed their lives and aspirations.

Sometimes adding your "Position" can be seen as "pulling rank", so
many of us don't always say who or what we do in Scouts.
But for the record.
1960's - 24th Bearsden Wolf Cubs !
1970 - dropped out but camped with SU, and Schools and carried out
outdoor activities with School and solo.
1990 - Son joined Beavers
1994 Son persuaded me to be SL 5th Hudds Skelmanthorpe
1995 Moved to 7th Hudds Clayton West as SL.
1996 Was given the option of SiC or GSL, took the latter
Am present at almost every Scout meeting, am acting VSL
Run Archery Centre with my Exec
Plan and apply for funding
Organise District Climbing and Archery competitions
Help with County Pioneering Camp.
Have been on District Exec.

That's about it. I don't have 30 years' Scouting experience, but I'm
