I have had an idea after having a Fondue whilst on a Ski Holiday I thought
we could try trangia Fondues

As well as getting them used to using trangias on the nights away
programming they can get a bit of International programming as well.

I've never made a Fondue before and Ill need to research it, may not be able
to get the ingredients in the UK,

I know you can have cheese or some sort of fat and then dip bread pieces,
meat, or cheese.

We could do something like molten chocolate and marshmallows which the kids
will probably enjoy and at the same time their Dentist/Dietician will lynch
me.

I've never done fondue in a camp situation, but we do have them fairly
frequently at home - really easy to do and accuracy of measurement of
ingredients isn't too important!

Meat fondue - use cooking oil or 50/50 oil & butter to cook in - needs
to be very hot. You also need reasonably good quality meat - pork
fillet, chicken breast etc. The Scouts will need to ensure that the
cubes of meat are properly cooked!
Accompaniments - a selection of sauces appropriate to the meat - eg
apple, flavoured mayonnaise for dipping the cooked meat in.
Because you're only cooking one piece of meat per person at a time, the
meal can last for ages. You know whether you can trust your Scouts with
boiling oil!

Cheese fondue - loads of different recipes, and yes, most of the cheeses
are available in the supermarkets. General principal is to grate the
cheese, heat the liquid (normally wine, cider or beer but I have a
couple of recipes that use apple juice or tinned soups) in the fondue
pan, gradually add cheese - stirring all the time and when it's all
combined add a bit of cornflour to stabilise. To dip use cubes of French
bread, or to be healthy, apples & raw vegetables.

Sweet fondues
Again loads of recipes - chocolate based ones, marshmallow based & I've
also got ones for fruit based fondues. Use fruit, cubes of sponge cake,
small meringues to dip.

Let me know if you want any detailed recipes

Alternatively, if this sounds like too much fuss, you can buy packets
of pre made up fondue mix in the supermarket, I know Sainsburys do one
(in the cheese isle in a kind of pink/purple box) so I would guess all
the other majors have one too.

bread, veg, cheese and cooked meat all work well in a cheese fondue.

Personally I don't think I'd be keen on my kids doing the oil one,
just a little bit too much risk associated.

Especially with the meat ones, you need to keep the oil at a high

temperature & so need a decent flame underneath!

We had a Fondue night at Scogui about a month ago. We had two cheese
ones, and a chocolate one. Homemade bread goes very well int he
cheese. Word of warning it took two washes to get the cheese sauce out
of the my trousers, and my trainders still bear the scar of the
chocolate. I think there are some pictures, or perhaps not at
www.scogui.org.uk.
