I have a Target Navtex which doesn't seem to receive anything.
I think the problem could be in the antenna but I'm not sure.
Can anyone tell me if I put an ordinary Ariel on this would it receive? or
does it have to be the active antenna?
The set powers up ok and says "ZCZC Program in Nasa Navtex NNNN" but
everything under is dots and dashes. no words or writing.
If it is the Ariel can I just take he circuit board out and join the whip to
the coax?
would anyone have a circuit diagram for the active antenna?
Would anyone have any idea?
Cheers for any help
Bobby

The Nasa Navtex target antennas seem to sometimes get water in them, but I
don't think this is the problem in your case.

No!

I guess you have a software problem. Have you tried hard resetting it? I've
forgotten how to do it but it is explained in the manual.>

Beware of a dry-joint where the centre wire of the aerial lead brings the
power into the Aerial unit. I have had to re-solder mine twice in the past,
due I think to damp getting in. The signal will jump the dry joint but the
d.c. power to the unit will not.

Why? I thought it would of? after all it is only a receiver (basically) and
you can receive on a piece of wire it's just transmitters that are a bit
funny about Ariel's??

I had a Target receiver working in the midlands obtaining wefax and navtex.
I had to use a long wire antenna, strung out from the upstairs bedroom
window to a tree at the bottom of the garden, approx 60feet horizontal.. If
you are closer to the transmitters (i.e. on the coast) you should get by
with a much smaller antenna, I understand most marine installations either
use the backstay, fitted with insulators, or an active antenna clamped to
the pushpit. You could test the receiver by tuning to around 200KHz AM where
you should find a strong commercial radio transmission with just a short
wire antenna poked in the aerial socket.

Have fun

I have one of these and find it almost useless. Very poor reception
most of the time, not at all user friendly, no non-volatile memory
etc. However, I usually get something intelligable (just the odd
non-readable character) or nothing.

It is possible to use an old Decca aerial (must be plenty of them
around still) for navtex - somewhere I have a mag showing you how if
you are interested.

Sounds like something wrong there. Mine is great - I am in Med and can pick
up Niton transmissions easily. And the memory is non-volatile! I think it a
great piece of kit for the price, and it uses less power than all its rivals
too.

Must be an updated model then, if it has non-volatile. I have to
reprogramme station everytime I use it.

I plan to replace it, probably with Nav6 Plus. Much better value in my
opinion.
