Now that we've moved to Cornwall it is my intention to convert a Holt
built GP14, wood hull # 12576, to a yawl. Before the protests start bear
with me; the needs must apply. I have hull, road trailer, launch
trolley, workshop, little money, time, a wife who's never been to sea
(oh, the *shame* of it! - wife ;-)) unlike my self (M.N): the game is to
make a little potter boat that can carry the Seagull engine, sail, camp
overnight or simply longline & of course open a beer on the Carrick
Roads. All with the intention of remaining conjugal. If anyone could
steer me towards getting hold of building plans, so that a sail plan
could be worked out, it would be much appreciated. Any thoughts welcomed
other than SPAMS & as ever, *Safe Sailing* --

P.S. - Sorry about the confusing mailbox names - we're still getting our
software sorted out!

Its a lot of work putting a Yawl rig on - you've got to move the main
mast, I imagine, re-engineer the shrouds and stuff, work out how to
attach and stay the mizzen... Is it worth it? Much cheaper to do
something like get a sail maker to put some slab reef points in the
mainsail, maybe add a higher boom position if you want more head
clearance etc... Most important of all get a jib instead of the genoa,
maybe an old enterprise one or something would do... Apart from that
the GP 14 was really designed with all that sort of thing in mind -
uch more so that racing in fact, so if it needs it have a major string
reducing exercise... As for camping, leave the boat on the beach and
carry a modern tent. Much more practical!

Something I have seen one member of our club do, is to replace the
centreboard
with a steel one. I think his weighted in at around 50 pounds. It's one mod
I plan to
carry out myself.
