"Beverly" is both a male and also a female name.
And yours is, "Road"?
There is a fine balance between turning the gain up and being
far too loud and distorted. You might be best fitting a small
compressor & limiter module inside the radio. Desolder the
mic audio cable and connect the input to the mic socket and
output to the mic audio wire. Use 12v from the radio.
Then get another radio and check
the audio level. If you just go inside and turn the preset to give
a higher deviation level on FM, you will end up splattering the
band and making other radios effectively filter you out. So no one
will hear you! To get a deviation meter for FM you will pay
a fortune, so you can do it by ear to start with.
A decent compressor/limiter module will make you stand out
from the rest without being distorted. You don't need to be
loud to be heard, you need to be clear and the circuit inside
the Midland type of radio is not the best as standard.
