Mablethorpe - Saltfleetby Dunes LINCOLNSHIRE

General

This is very much an unofficial nude beach as a by-law forbids nakedness
on the beach and the dunes behind. Who cares! Flout it and flaunt it.

Access & Parking

From Mablethorpe take the A1104 Alford road inland. About a mile from
Mablethorpe centre turn right onto the A1031 coast road north towards
Saltfleet. Drive for a further two and a half miles past Meers Bridge
and Theddlethorpe St. Helen. About three quarters of a mile past
Theddlethorpe St. Helen you will find Sea Lane, a minor road on the
right. It will be signposted for the Saltfleetby-Theddlethorpe Nature
Reserve. Drive to this and park in the car park there.

Now walk to the beach and reach it by a derelict gun site. Head north
for four hundred yards or so and look for a nice spot to strip off.

Description

A nice barefoot sandy beach north of a nature reserve with dunes to
provide walks, shelter and seclusion. This is a National Nature Reserve
and the grass-covered dune banks are an important habitat for the
Natterjack toad. (A small toad with a yellow stripe on its back that
runs instead of hops!) The sea recedes so far that it all but disappears
across a great expanse of ridged sand and mud. The tide will come racing
in so watch out if you are shell hunting. This great flat expanse means
you can paddle but the swimming is poor.

Facilities

At the entrance to the nature reserve you will find some facilities.
Otherwise use Theddlethorpe St. Helens.

Water Quality

Mablethorpe beach meets the minimum EEC standard. It has one outlet
dumping secondary treated waste into an inland drain.

Seclusion

Plentiful in the dunes. Access from the north seems very limited so the
further north you go the fewer people you should see. Mablethorpe is a
large holiday centre with caravan sites so some people may make it out
to these dunes. You may also be disturbed by pleasure boat users.
