Does anybody out there know of any naturist or costumes optional beaches on
the North West coast. Roughly from North Wales to Cumbria.
We tried Formby and it was awful. A naturist couple there said that extreme
caution was necessary and the beach is filthy. I have also head that
Ainsdale has regular patrols of quad biking wardens to stamp on any
naturism.
Any suggestions?

The council at Ainsdale do not have any byelaws prohibiting nudity - have
been doing battle with them when was R&LO for BN but they are still
insisting on retaining signs which seem to imply that they do have these
powers.

Actually, Sue, I did a piece on Ainsdale several years ago, and physically
walked the coast on the beach itself and checking at each access point (both
footpaths and those for vehicles) from Formby to Southport looking for that
exactly. Didn't see any such signs regarding nudity - but I did note that
they (Ainsdale via the local council - Southport) do have their bye-laws
posted at the entry to the car park. They have a whole list of controlled
activities (noise / loud music; fires; large gatherings; tents; camping;
ect) but nudity on the beach is not one of them.
Ditto for the separate NT bye-laws posted at the Formby squirrel reserve
which provides the next south-most access to the beach with a parking
facility. Also no anti-nudity signs in evidence there either. The NT
property does not include the actual beach frontage that you access through
their car park - that (beach) is still under Southport council control for
management purposes.
Next north of Ainsdale is the Southport beach access and parking area (ca
1/2 mile south of Pleasureland and the Southport pier) - bye-laws but no
anti-nudity signs.
If there ever were signs they were gone, at least when I was last there
though that has been a couple of years now.

I have visited Formby beach a number of times as a textile, normally parking at
the lifeboat station car park. The council have a sign which reads 'nudism is
forbidden on this beach', although I think the sign is only displayed when the
car park is manned. The beach and dunes are also regularly patrolled by the
police helicopter.
Ainsdale doesn't have any signs but does have police quad bike patrols, and
often horses ridden along the length of the beach. Southport also doesnt have
signs.
Incidentally, I've never found Formby to be dirty - quite the opposite in fact.
However the sea is a long way out, and there are mudflats. Of the three beaches
I much prefer Formby.
I'm not a resident in Sefton, but maybe Sue could inform us who in the council
we should contact to query the signs at Formby.

Thanks Andrew. I never explored the area around the lifeboat station (aka
Formby Point) and I don't drive so wouldn't necessarily make my entry via
the car park in any case. In fact, some maps indicate that Formby Point is
further north nearer to the Squrrel Reserve.
Will have to take a trip around there and see if they are still using the
signs and on what basis of authority.

I don't think Formby Point is a 'point' in the mathematical
sense! On the 1848 OS 6" map, the name 'Formby Point'is
strung out along the coast from SD 27124 08386 (the 'F'of
'Formby') to SD 28168 05204 (the 't'of 'Point').

Unfortunately I do not have the paperwork as this was returned to BN when I

I shall be BN Regional Rep for the NW Region after the AGM in September.
I hope I can work with the new Research and Liaison Officer to find out
as much as possible about the situation in the region and make that
information available to members.
I don't get to beaches very often, but I welcome any reports on actual
experiences on naturist beaches or naturist facilities anywhere in NW
region this summer. Please let me have as much detail as possible!

You are correct Steve. On the ground the place called "Formby Point" is
little more then a longish slow curve in the coastline. It is nothing like
the name implied character of some kind of obvious geographic "point" with
the land falling back on both sides.

We use Dyffryn in north wales it has become more popular over the years. we
have used it as our family holiday beach for the last 10 years.we also live
in the Manchester area and find that we can do weekends at Dyffryn, and if
you are self sufficient glyns field is to be recommended, he doesn't take
caravans. we have tried wells in Norfolk also but that's a long walk and
last year went as a family to France for the first time that was nice.
