Funny. The INF guide (94/95) lists 12 clubs affiliated to the Federatie van
Belgische Naturisten/Fédération Belge de Naturisme. Of these, maybe one or
two are outside Belgium. 20 swimming sessions are listed, including two in
Brussels:
Piscine d'Ixelles, Rue de la Natation 10 (tel. 091-28-68-17)
Piscine de Laken, Rue Champs de l'Église 89 (tel. 091-28-68-17)

This is what I'd heard too. NO naturist beaches or resorts. It's
therefore always struck me as particularly odd that the INF headquarters
<http://www.inf-fni.org/> are in Belgium!

HI !
Here's some news from a Belgian naturist...
In Belgium we - unfortunately - have no free beaches nor any public
sites were you can walk around naked. The only way to practise nudism
is in club resorts. Most naturists are member of a naturist club and
these clubs own sites were nudism is allowed. These club also offer
weekly swimming evenings. These evenings often take place in official
swimming pools, such as mentioned above. The strange thing is that
there is no problem in swimming nude during these activities, but they
are ALWAYS organized by clubs. You have to be an INF member to take
place in these acitivities.
My family and I often go to the Monday swimming evening (6.45 - 7.30
pm) in the Piscine d'Ixelles, Rue de la Natation 10, but it's closed
during July & August.
If we want to go to the beach, we always drive to the Dutch coast,
which, fortunately, isn't much further away than the Belgian coast
from here...
Hope this clarifies things a bit...
How can naturism be "illegal" in a European country surrounded by others where
naturism is such a normal part of life ?. (And how do you make naturism illegal
without putting a spy in every back garden ?)
David.

The following message from Alan Reekie in Brussels (quoted with
permission) may be of interest:
<quote>
Le Soir, Brussels, 9 July 1998, page 16
Heavy fine for a nudist The Bruges Correctional Tribunal has sentenced a
26-year-old man from Ostendto a fine of 20000 Belgian francs (about GBP
330) for 'indecency'. Last summer, he was caught while subathing naked
in the dunes at Mariakerke (nearOstend). These dunes have a reputation
as a meeting-place for homosexuals. Access to them has been prevented by
a barbed-wire fence since last summer. The presiding judge stressed that
the size of the fine was intended to deter the man from re-offending.

-------------------
In a 'chat show' interview on the public TV network VRT last night, a
representative of the Belgian naturist federation stressed that public
nudity here remains illegal under all circumstances, although 'topless'
(sun-) bathing on the beaches has been tolerated for the last few years.
--------------------------
A 'happening' in advance of the demonstration at Bredene
Naturism at the Belgian coast:
At the initiative of a local councillor, Jacques De Roo (Socialist), a
major naturist demonstration will be held in the dunes near the seaside
resort of Bredene, at the end of August 1998. Jacques de Roo is
organising this demonstation, which should be largely open to the
general public, in order to stress the importance of reserving a stretch
of the Belgian coast for naturism. According to him, a vast stretch of
the beach and dunes between Bredeene and De Haan, where nobody ever
goes, would be very suitable. He says this would not upset anybody and
would attract new tourists from among those people who currently avoid
the Belgian coast. Although belonging to the same political party,
Bredene's Burgmaster, Willy Van Hooren, does not share these opinions.
An unexpected supporter
-----------------------
On Saturday, Jacques De Roo received support from an unexpected source:
Denis Klafert from Brugge. He, too, thinks that it's necessary to have a
naturist beach on the Belgian coast, and has chosen three possible
locations. Without consulting the local councils concerned, Denis
Klafert erected notice-boards on these stretches at Koksijde,
Blankenberge and Knokke announcing their designation as naturist beaches
in four languages. Then taking his idea to its logical conclusion, Denis
Klafert undressed on the beach between Blankenberge and Zeebrugge, and
plunged naked into the briny - Whether by chance or not, just as a
police helicopter happened to be passing by...
The Burgmaster of Blankenberge, Ludo Monset, was quick to dissociate
himself from this initiative, and let it be known that he was opposed to
the designation of a zone for naturism in his municipality. For his
part, the Burgmaster of Knokke-Heist, Count Leopold Lippens, said that
he would take no decision before there is a law making provision for
designating such zones.

Easy you make a law which forbids naturism in public but which permits
it in private (including clubs). Anyone who wants to be naked in public
either goes to a neighbouring country or pays a 300 quid fine.

Mike Hopkins - wear a smile if nothing else
(If replying direct, please change "co-uk" to "co.uk")
Perhaps if a few email addresses or fax numbers could be supplied, the
worthy gentlemen might receive a few messages from potential tourists
who will be spending there money elsewhere.

Such silly and easy to answer questions.
How can it?
The ruling body of that ( or any ) country makes it so.
>how do you make naturism illegal

Whether there is a spy or not the act would still be illegal even if it
wasn't witnessed, a murder is a murder even if no ones else witnesses
it.

The only URL I have available relates to a 'happening' in advance of the
30th August demonstration, so I'm not sure that it's relevant (and it's
in French) but here it is, FWIW:

OK, so I didn't phrase myself very well. I wasn't asking how laws are made, I
was asking WHY laws are made. Why, in the midst of the countries with the most
laid back attitudes to naturism in Europe does another, culturally similar one,
attempt to ban naturism in public completely ?.
The answer to my second question was answered by another posting, naturism is
NOT illegal in Belgium, only public naturism. A significant difference.
David.

Just to confirm that the demonstration takes place on the 30th August.
I've also been asked to mention that the official tourist boards of the
Belgian coastal resorts can be contacted by e-mail (or by filling in
on-line forms) via this Web site:
- English language version available.

Heard on the radio yesterday that in Singapore it's illegal to be naked
in your own home. Try enforcing that one!
OK, I know - Singapore is nowhere near Belgium, and I don't have a home
there either, but thought it was interesting anyway. Would one sock make
it legal? (Depends where you wear it, I guess!!) Or a T-shirt? (Quickly
stops, avoiding collision with 'Willy Danglers' thread!)

There is an on-line form but didn't have space for comments/queries.
They just got their first "innocent" enquiry about naturist facilities.
I hope I not breaching etiquette too much by quoting an email I got from
the tourist office:
Sorry, but we don't have any naturist holiday facilities.
