I have compiled a NUFF entry which follows. Why has this beach not
been mentioned before?
Edwin Hutton
Normans Bay/ Cooden Beach, Sussex.
Location.
This beach is situated between the Cooden Beach end of Bexhill and the
seaside village of Normans Bay.
OS Landranger map 199 grid reference TQ690057 to TQ697059.
Status.
Unofficial but has been in use for some thirty years or so.
Description.
Between the beach and Hooe Level (ex salt marsh now wate meadows) there
is a pebble bank to stop Hooe Level being swamped by the sea.
The beach side of this bank is pebbles at the top, with shingle
and sand at low tide. At very low tide there is a large expanse
of sand, too flat to allow swimming. The other side of the pebble
bank has the local railway after a grassy bank and field.
The naturist section of this beach is very quiet, with virtually no
textile usage. Visitors include the usual single males, hetero couples
and families. Due to the flat countryside it can probably get rather
windy so a lot of people bring wind-breaks.
There are no dunes to hide in so there can not be much in the way of
problems, though one local told me that there is one couple that go
in for public sex (behind their windbreak?).
Water Quality.
Good.
For the Naturalist(sic).
Lugworms and similar in the sand at very low tide.
A few shells on the beach.
Saw a turnstone (bird) as the tide was coming in over the sand.
Typical seaside flora at the top of the bank, e.g. Seakale, Horned
Poppy,
Vipers Bugloss, etc.
Ease of access.
Probably easier than Eastney Beach!
Access from the west.
There is a minor road from the A27/A259 roundabout in Pevensey to
Cooden Beach railway station. About halfway along this there is a
more minor road southwards signposted to Normans Bay. Follow this
road over manned(sic) level crossing at Normans Bay railway station
and continue until just past the first set of caravans on the left.
Turn left here past the caravan site private car park and continue
along the road past all the houses (speed bumps) until you come to
two beach car parks, one before HPM Glass and a bigger one past
HPM Glass. Walk to the beach and turn left along the pebble bank.
Naturist use starts roughly when the rope fence on your left finishes,
only four or five groins or so.
Access from the east.
From the Cooden Beach Hotel take the (same) minor road to Pevensey.
This initially follows the sea front behind beach huts etc. When
the road bears right and goes over a level crossing there is roadside
parking for a dozen or so cars. Walk to the beach and turn left.
I am not sure how far to the naturist bit as I have not used this end -
just look for current usage. It might be almost immediate.
Access by rail.
Normans Bay railway station is about half a mile on level ground.
Cooden Beach railway station is about a mile on level ground.
These are on the line from Eastbourne to Hastings. Remarkably
Normans Bay has one train per hour, and Cooden Beach two trains per
hour.
Facilities.
None to speak of. Close to the caravan site car park in Normans Bay
there is a well maintained toilet block, though parking is difficult
there.
Compiled by Edwin Hutton.
Thanks Edwin. Early this year, when I went to Covehurst, I got talking
to some of the locals and heard mention of Pevensey. That must be it.

Sorry Mr Hutton, Jesus what a grotty little place Norman's Bay is. Last time
I was there, 1995, the pollution was sufficient for emergency notices from
the council.
As for the regular shaggers they've been at it at Norman's for years. They
must be getting on a bit now. She's an 'ex-page three model', c1980, and
he's semi-literate - or gives that impression. What a permed and preening
lothario. I know of at least one clandestine video in circulation featuring
the febrile pair. They never use windbreaks.
Why accept all these grot holes? Try the town beach at the far end of
Bognor - few people and fine sands. So what if there's an odd textile, just
go nude.

Thanks very much but chocolate gives me a migraine. Can I have a
welsh cake (or several) instead?

Good point but what is acceptable? Doesn't meet EC regs. Report: TheTimes
about three months ago.
>Normans Bay is not exactly a grot hole. Families with kids don't usually
>use grot holes.
Many parents are ignorant. Having children does not make one wiser.
>Write us a report on Bognor then.
Just do it, who needs reports all the time? I went nude on Southbourne beach
(Bournemouth) last night around 5.30 pm. No comment from anybody people,
cheeky grins from a couple of adolescent girls. Air cool, water like a bath.

Mark:
All our well-known naturist beaches must have started out this way, by
someone 'just doing it'. However... how much account should we take
of other peoples' feelings? Do you make any effort to be
inconspicuous? Do you go nude on a textile beach only when there are
few people around, and keep a distance from them, or would you do it
in the middle of a crowded beach? We know that some people (perhaps
only a small minority) are shocked and disgusted at seeing a naked
person on a beach, and they assume all the worst motives. Do you just
assume that if no-one complains then they don't mind?
I've gone nude on a textile beach in Old Portsmouth a few times this
year because it's only 5 minutes away from work, compared to a 20
minute slog on the bike for the naturist end, which I usually go to.
It's a very popular beach on the busiest part of the sea front, but
enclosed by high walls, and I only go nude if I can get right in the
corner and stand the rucksack up beside me so that no-one (or only one
or two people) can see that I've got nothing on. I'd much rather not
have to hide, but I don't know how people would react and I would hate
any confrontation.
[ I know we've discussed this recently in u.r.n but since Mark brought
it up I thought it'd be interesting to hear his views ]
On 'trip reports': I think reports *are* useful, because most people
would feel more comfortable on a beach with a tradition of nude use,
and where they are likely to be in the company of at least some other
nude people, not just textiles. So I say "Thanks Edwin, keep 'em
coming" :-)

I try both?

I prefer without and yes you can have 2

You obviously didn't explore the area very much. Perhaps the private
caravan site beach put you off walking along the front in an eastwards
direction. Anyway glad to be of assistance - enjoy yourself.
Interestingly Pauline doesn't go there very much as she lives in
Hastings and finds the trip round Bexhill more trouble than the
112 steps.
Note - I get the impression that the bonking couple only do it on
Sundays or do their stuff at the Cooden Beach end, my two visits on a
Saturday and Monday didn't reveal anything untoward at all.
Edwin Hutton
Of course nobody _needs_ trip reports and suchlike, but they do have a
useful role in encouraging and re-assuring some of the more hesitant
among us - maybe we're not all as self-confident as you are, Mark.
Some people even find them interesting in their own right <g> I'm
presently exchanging e-mail with someone who has emigrated to Brazil but
who downloads URN daily in order to read about places he remembers from
visits to Britain.

Nice to see you're taking Rex Watson's advice, Mark!
Welcome to our little coterie.

People who have to drive three hours to get to a beach need the reports,
so they can decide which direction to go!
I am personally grateful to the contributors to and maintainers of NUFF
for the information I can glean.

This was an ironic reference to Mark's alleged view of this newsgroup

recall).
Anyone remember those pre-Internet days when you didn't need to use ;-) to
alert readers to your use of irony?

Hi Robert...
Are you interested in any of the things discussed in this group? If
so, why not actually *discuss* something (instead of making dismissive
and worthless comments). If not, why bother to post here at all? So
far it just looks like you have nothing intelligent to say, which I'm
*sure* is not the case :-)

Those who can do, those who can't teach, those who can do neither become
critics.
There is a fourth group, reserved for those who cannot string a sentence
together, they are called " celebrities"
Marc
Actually, I believe the conventional extension of GBS's original is "and
those can't teach teach teachers".
As always with such sayings, there's some truth in there, but (IMO),
even as generalisations, all versions of this witticism are garbage.

When a thread gets this far off the original topic, we should have
some convention for renaming it. From Normans Bay (mine) to someone who
did't like it some years ago to someone who .... to a disagreement
about the usefulness of trip reports to ... George Bernard

I can't think how to get Hitler into this thread.
