does anyone outside of Blaney-land still use Iridium?

I think our emergency communications kits still contain an Iridium phone.
They're reassuringly phone-like, as they don't need you to point them at a
satellite.

At the risk of a whoosh of galactic proportions, I think *all*
sat-phone users do.
I'll rephrase it. Outside of the US Military-Industrial-
DisasterCapitalist complex, who uses sat phones?

Around here, loads of folks. Franco wouldn't let them have any copper
down here because they were all communists. Cataluña got everything and
as a result, nowadays the catalans have andaluz slaves. It's true, I'm
telling you!

I suppose I should clarify that. The ones I have used on company
ships are the Inmarsat(?) exchange style ones, but the bridge they
seem to have a spare Iridium one, or one on another 'network' other
than Inmarsat.

Five quid a minute, iirc.
I know the independent merchant ships my dad works on have satphone
systems on board; if it's Iridium, I know not.

Most ships have Inmarsat but the sats are in geosynchronous equatorial
orbit which means that a decent steerable dish is required and it
cannot cover high latitudes.
Iridium sats are in a low polar orbit so they can offer total global
coverage even in the polar areas and will work with small handheld phones.
Most ships will carry one or more Iridium phones as a backup and for
high latitude use if required. The downside is fewer fancy facilities
and higher call costs.
Modern Iridium phones are also GSM compatible so they will use GSM
roaming when coverage is available, reducing call costs. This makes
them ideal for personal handheld use in remote areas.
Very profitable, especially when there are 500 other people on the
ship. Oh, and countless other cruise ships with the same or more on
board trying to phone home.
