Hi,

When I am riding I hear a "flapping" noise. The frequency of the "flap" increases as I ride faster (never particularly fast). I have put the bike (Yamaha Virago 250) up on stands and had a good look around the wheels front and back. I can't find anything loose or rubbing against the wheels or the tyres. I have had a look around the frame and can't find anything "flapping" loose. Is there anything else I can check that might be causing this noise? I don't want to ignore it and then have an expensive failure because I ignored something obvious and easily fixable.
I don't have great hearing so the sound I hear must be fairly loud to be heard over the wind noise.

Thanks,

Clive

I will get a team on to that now.

The sound has only started this past weak. The jacket has been worn (on and off) for years. No "flapping" when I am riding other bike.

The wheels will be rotating fairly quickly even at low speed. Can you
hazard a guess at the flap frequency. I suspect its more in to FPM
(flaps per minute) rather than Hz. With the bike on stands your weight
won't be loading up the suspension, which might be a factor.

Of course that should have been, I will get a crack team on to that immediately.

Heh. Alright, maybe a blowing exhaust?

The exhaust was replaced a month ago. I will check all the various connection points (some are big jubilee clips) are secure.

is the flapping linked to road speed or engine speed? Ride until it flaps
then dip the clutch. If the flapping goes away then it is engine speed
related. The flapping could be clutch or camchain if engine related.

If not engine speed related, a worn final drive chain can become noisy.
Tight spot running over sprockets, too loose and hitting something. Worn

OK I will try that at weekend. I will ride the XJ6 until then.

I will check the chain tension this weekend.

Well, loud enough for me to hear it when riding but not a great "clanking" noise more of a, well, "flap" - something like a piece of rigid leather was strapped to the front fork and flapping on the wire spokes of the Virago's wheel.

I suppose if it is wheel related it will increase in frequency as I accelerate, if engine related it will drop in frequency as I change up gear. ???

You missed Bruce's wit. It's easily done.
Keep both hands on the bars and the fapping noise should stop.

I am amazed that no one has yet suggested removing the playing card from
the spokes.

That will be a "whoosh" then

Yep, a bit like people who break.

The two times I can recall this happening it was

a: collar fastening on jacket, flapping against the underside of the helmet.
b: end of chin strap on helmet not tucked into little sleeve thing.

I know that sound of clip on helmet. More of a "clacking" than a "flapping" to give its technical name.

You don't have something caught in the tyre treads, or a nail?

I have had a weird flapping of the shoulders of my leather jacket at
certain speeds when it was new and a bit more supple than it is now,
and, as it was summer, I was only wearing a T-shirt underneath, so
there was a bit of slack. The fluttering got so bad that my crash
helmet was being shaken in sympathy (I guess the airflow must have
been pulsing against the bottom of the lid) and I was almost seeing
double at one point. Weird effect.
