After a rather spirited section, we were riding slowly along a lane,
having waited for the backmarkers to catch up. There were a couple of
small kids at the side of the road, obviously impressed with us in our
specialist kit and on fancy hi-tech bikes. Of course, I can't resist
an audience, so I thought I'd pull a stoppie. However, I hadn't been
on the bike for a little while, and I completely misjudged it - the
back came up way too fast and before I knew it I was over the
handlebars and hit the ground hard, with the bike crashing to the
ground right behind me.
My mates were a bit shocked, but then just started laughing, as did I,
partly to cover my embarrasment, but mostly cos it was just so funny.
Mountain bikes are great fun.

just how 'high tech' BTW?
A mate of mine recently bought a mountain bike for around
£3500! - I of course thing he is barking mad!
I thought Michaels £200 MB was high tech, with front disk
brake, monolever rear suspension, and paddle gear change.
Mate's bike has all of the above plus hydraulic brakes, but
I still have difficulty figuring out how a bike can cost
half the price of a decent new motorbike.

Quite. Mine is a Marin "East Peak" - full suspension, but not disc
brakes. I got it in a mega-deal for 750 - list was 1100 when I got it
18 months ago. One of my mates was on marin hardtail, but with disc
brakes.

When did you race? For some strange reason I am sure I recall your name
being in any number of MTB magazines. Also did you race at the first
Malvern Hills race?
In times past [1] I have been known to ride round like a semi-loon on a
MTB and I took part (raced would be an exaggeration) in the first
Malvern Hills race. I even remember being commentated on as I descended
towards the finish line on my first Specialized Stumpjumper :-)

why did you stop racing? sex, drugs and beer?
<npm>
[1] when I wasn't such a porky lump and cycled regularly [2].
[2] i.e. before I got a motorbike and became a lazy git.

I was discussing a mate's downhill race bike with his dad last year.
The suspension cost was similar to that of kitting out the SV with
Ohlins. In it's defence you could stand it vertically on the front
wheel, drop the back and it wouldn't bounce. It just stopped on the
deck which was seriously impressive damping, IMHO.
