Guitar rig 3, fom Native Instruments. Not a hardware solution, but a PC based
simulator, and it is Free ! It was on a recent computer music dvd.

I don't seem able to find V3 for free? Also, how do I connect guitar to PC?

I use this.
Might solve your effects problem to an extent if you're mainly playing
to yourself through headphones.

Alternative is to connect direct to PC...
I've plugged guitar into amp, and then fed the headphones into the Line In
on the PC, but it's very quiet...
Why is this?
If I feed it straight to my speakers (MP3 connection), then it's fine.

Until you come to playing live. That's when it all turns to shit. Even the
POD's are crap in comparison to a decent FX unit designed with live playing
