This link has just turned up on the IBMWR list (well, a couple of days
ago) - a demobbed Brit rode across the US back in 1919:

"The total number of replacements to the engine alone
comprised the following: Five new cylinders; three
pistons; five gudgeon pins; three complete sets of
bearings; two connecting rods, and eleven sparking plugs."

Relative of yours?

"The machine was entirely overhauled on four occasions
between the Atlantic and the Pacific, and on three of
these by the recognized agents of the manufacturers.
The engine cut-out switch was the only part of the machine
that did not break, come loose, or go wrong sooner or
later. I was thrown off 142 times, and after that I stopped
counting! Apart from that I had no trouble."

Fantastic stuff.

Dunno what you're sniggering at. NY to LA is 2,462 miles, or 13,949,760
feet.

Which, divided by 53 is 263,203 spark plugs.

Fabulous stuff. Very well written, an astonishing tale.

Worth a read I thought, in print too.
http://www.langtoninfo.co.uk/showitem.asp?isbn=160355095X
if that is what tickles your fancy.

I read the pdf on PC which was not too bad, OCR ed (it
seems) in decent font, not 3 bad.

Thanks a *lot* for the pointer.

Thanks, downloaded for reading. A similar era book is 'One Man Caravan'
by Robert Edison Fulton Jr. Which tells of his wander from London to New
York, across 22 countries, on a Douglas twin starting in 1932; it's an
excellent read IMO.
