What size hole does a 10mm headed bolt need to go through, is a normal 10 mm
headed bolt M6 or M8?

I don't have access at the moment to any to measure.

Cheers

Bill

Shank size Thread Spanner
Pitch Size
M6 (6mm) 1.00mm 10mm
M8 (8mm) 1.25mm 13mm (12mm on some Japanese bolts)
M10 (10mm) 1.50mm 17mm
M12 (12mm) 1.75mm 19mm

Tapping Drill Size = Screw Diameter - Thread Pitch (rule of thumb).
For the shank hole, I'd use an oversize drill bit about 0.5 mm

The clue is in the '6' and '8'. M6 = 6mm, can you guess what M10 is? ;-)

Bolts with a 10mm head are *normally* M6.

I think you'll find most Japanese M10s are 14 mm AF -- certainly
Suzuki spammer sizes are 10, 12, and 14 mm AF. Yamaha often use 13 mm
for M8 tho'.
