Taking the piss out Bonwick's claw hand can have some unexpected
consequences.

Found myself under the knife on Saturday having a K-wire on a bone in
my thumb. Classic filtering collision on Friday with white van man
deciding to turn right whilst I was along side him. Of course he
claims he was signaling.
Sporting a fractured left collar bone and a right hand in plaster.
Bike is looking a bit poorly too. Will post pictures when I can get
someone to drive the PC.

Cool. I send the cash to the driver now I know he got the right
person.

Did you have the wire put in under a local or did you learn from my
mistake and demand a general? My pins come out a week tomorrow but the
finger still looks as if it's been hit with a hammer.

I couldn't see any damage to the thumb but the consultant tried to
manipulate the bone back into place before putting the plaster on.
One of the bones was chipped too. Unfortunately it was still unstable
so they kept me in overnight then general in the morning for the
operation. Feels a bit sore now but yesterday and Friday are a bit
hazy.

Complete and utter nightmare doing even basic stuff, almost didn't
let me out until I said I had a friend to help me.

At least the van is insured according to askmid, and hopefully Matalan Man
is on the policy.
http://www.bgtbikersolicitors.co.uk/case_law.html#filtering doesn't look
optimisitc for anything better than 50-50, although note the last case
which was 75-25 in favour of the biker.

Sorry to hear that. GWS and I hope his insco pays up without quibbling.
The required sequence is MIRROR signal manoeuvre so it doesn't really matter
if he was signalling or not.

U turn is different to someone making a legitimate right turn as the 3rd
party claims. Hence my reference to that document - it will go 50-50 unless
Donald has a witness that says WVM turned suddenly into "something that was
not an obvious junction inc. petrol stations, depot etc"

All depends how fast the op was filtering and if the van was actually
indicating .

Quite possible if the op has no witness they may go knock for knock

On reflection, you may well be correct. Even if the driver didn't signal
there would probably be a view that overtaking at a junction is an
inherently dangerous activity and the decision to do so was a contributory
factor. I reckon bike/car at 25/75 or 50/50 depending on circumstances,
witnesses etc.

When I had a similar type off, it was obvious where the driver worked
(Asian-run dodgy clothes factory in Edmonton), and went and complained
to his boss/father, who then got me more cash than I'd asked for[1]
from his safe and told me please not to report it to the police. I'm
assuming the son/idiot was uninsured for the company van.

>(1) Driver pulled a u-turn whilst I was alongside.

in my case, driver pulled a non-indicated right hand turn into a
petrol station whilst I was alongside.

[1] there was fuck-all damage to the bike[2], but I was a bit annoyed.

Heh, still hurts either way. If he had done mirror signal mirror
manouver then I would have avoided him. Surprised me that the only
thing that went through my mind was "This is all wrong, I don't seem
to have time to do any avoidance". Only saving grace was that I was
going quite slow. Bike basically stopped as it hit the door then
toppled over.

I was a bit too shocked to get one of the following cars to describe
what happened. Was surprised to find that I'd taken those photographs
when I checked my phone on the Sunday. Remember the van driver saying
he would call an ambulance and me saying don't be silly, I'll just
get a taxi to the hospital. Wasn't until I sat in the ambulance and
tried to get my jacket off that I realised my left shoulder was out
of action. Police were very friendly, especially the rather charming
police woman ;-)

It doesn't hurt. Well, mine didn't, came out quite easily. After
sitting in the waiting room for about 3 hours. I was like, "I could
have done that myself, saved myself a morning." Droid with pliers:
"Mumble."

If you want to save the pins to stick on your keyring or whatever,
take a little box with you and claim them on the spot, otherwise
they'll just dump them in the sharps bin.

I'm certainly claiming them.

I tried turning one a bit last week when I took the dressing off and
it seemed a bit reluctant to move so I stopped rather than do any
damage. I'd take them out myself and go to see the surgeon and just
tell him they fell out but he already suspects I'm a not the sharpest
knife when it comes to self preservation (1) and I'd hate to prove him
right.

(1) When I went in for the op he asked if I'd ridden there on the bike
and was going to put my hand in plaster until I assured him I wouldn't
go on a bike until the pins were out. I lied.

The ends on mine are hooked over into a 'U' shape which would act like
a fish hook if I didn't have them covered and was stupid enough to put
my hand into my pocket.

Originally they were supposed to go in one side, through the joint and
out the other side but the surgeon decided to stop short of breaking
through when he put them in. I suppose this is better because it
halves the number of holes in the finger and it should heal up better.

I'm not impressed by the state of the finger because it looks a mess
and I reckon I'll still struggle to get bike gloves on and it'll be
off inside a couple of years. Maybe frost bite is the answer and I
should just let it get nipped then eventually drop off?

Heh, when you start to go over the sequence of events it's surprising
the number of things that led to it. Karma is a bitch.

Car was in the garage with a loose crank shaft. I was visiting a
friend were parking restrictions started 8:30 in the morning.
Normally I'd buy a ticket and have an extra hour in bed but because
it was raining I decided just to go to work. There was no need to
filter because I was early but when confronted with a queue of static
traffic and you're on a bike it'd be rude not to. Obviously my normal
hyper paranoia on the bike was low that morning as I'd had one of the
best nights sex I'd ever had and felt pretty relaxed.

That's a bummer :-(

My ex-wife has met quite a few of my girlfriends 8 years after
divorce. And she gets on well with all of them. We keep our distance
for obvious reasons after a 20 year relationship, but my g/fs and ex
have never had a problem when we have encountered. I was only talking
to the ex today ...

You forgot to mention that bird you used to live with. The dancer, or
stripper, or whatever she was.

Stripper

But she was never my girlfriend. Just a very good friend. Still is. It
is possible to have friends of the opposite sex without shagging them
or is that not the way it works in the UK :-P

I've still got a girlfriend in the UK that I miss. Damn your visa
rules.
