I'm going to visit this exhibition :
<http://www.royalcollection.org.uk/exhibitions/HOTGA>

in the next 2 weeks, at the Queens Gallery, Buckingham Palace. I'm
pretty sure she won't let me leave my bike against the front gates, so
is there somewhere local to park it?
Paid for is not a problem, I'll be arriving after 10am.

Thanks
Alan.

Theres' a big, secure, open area just outside the Palace. You aim for the
(quite ornate) security barrier and a smartly uniformed Parking Attendant will
tell you exactly where you can park your bike.

If you zoom in, you'll find a bike parking area that looks like it's
right outside. You have to pay 'though.

Spring Gardens underground car park, just off Trafalgar Sq. is the first
one that comes to mind. There maybe nearer places, but it's a nice walk
up the Mall.

Love the photos, amazing quality, focus, exposure, etc considering they
were taken 100 years ago.

Yes, in desperately cold conditions, with a 8x10 plate camera, after
months at sea, then months stranded on the ice pack with little rations.
Shackeltons photographer (sorry, dont have his name to hand now), dived
into the water to get his plates when the ship finally sunk, and nearly
died from the cold. But his pictures show it was worth it.

There have been a number of exhibitions of the various expeditions
before, but afaiaa, they have never been shown together like in this
exhibition.

We were due to see it at Christmas, but got sidelined at the National
Gallery then with the Actresses exhibits, and ran out of time on the
day, so we need to get there before the 15th when it shuts.

From the picture legends: Frank Hurley (1885-1962) (photographer).

Not only an antarctic hero, but also a great artist!

Right, thanks for that, I have just tried to register to pay for it, but
it says "User already exists"

So, I tried a few variations, and it appears someone has already got my
mobile number registered, I've found this out by registering someone
elses number - 1 digit different to mine.
Now I have an account with the wrong number, it cannot be edited to my
real number.
What a pile of shit this registration system is.

Luckily, I have a spare payg mobile, so will try that,- and indeed that
does register fine.

Looking at the bike bays in the area, there are a number in the vicinity
(Palace St.?) so will try these first.

Hurley, on the Shackleton trip, was the one I was thinking of, when the
ship was crushed by ice, yet they all survived.

Anyway, I went today, and it was well worth it. I thought the
Shackelton/Hurley pics would be the best, but the Scott/Ponting ones
outshone them, mainly as they were hell of a lot bigger than the
Hurleys. There were 2 magnificent landscape pics, probably 20x16" which
looked like they were printed yesterday, but were nearly 100 years old.
The photo was taken in 1911, but they were not developed, or maybe not
printed? until they got back to the UK.

The difference in size (most of the Hurley pics were 8"x5" or similar,
with the Pontings at least 16x12) was because both expeditions presented
the Monarch with various artifacts when they returned, and it appears
the Scott expedition had enough money to do the prints justice, whereas
the Shackleton ones were presented in a book, so were far smaller.

It is certainly worth a visit, you have until the 15th April, smaller
than I expected, and I was hoping to see the 2 expeditions side by side,
but they are in different rooms, but , as the aforesaid difference in
size of the prints, it may not have looked good with a large pic, then a
small one etc.

London traffic - how do people live with that madness? I was on my bike
(got a parking place 100 metres or so from the Palace on Palace Road) ,
but it was gridlock from Lords to Hyde Park Corner. There was so much
traffic, I couldnt even filter for much of the route, a cyclist was at
the side of me and said the same - there wasnt even room for him to go
along the road next to the kerb.
Called into a pub, £3 for half a pint and a packet of crisps - not even
a 'large/grab bag' packet. I'm glad to be in the Midlands!

With a Ducati 848 and the right leathers you can park inside.

I doubt there is a pub in Perth where you could get beer and crisps that
cheap. I paid 10 pounds Aus$15 for a pint of Hoegaarden in a pub a few
weeks ago.
