Hurley, on the Shackleton trip, was the one I was thinking of, when the
ship was crushed by ice, yet they all survived.
Anyway, I went today, and it was well worth it. I thought the
Shackelton/Hurley pics would be the best, but the Scott/Ponting ones
outshone them, mainly as they were hell of a lot bigger than the
Hurleys. There were 2 magnificent landscape pics, probably 20x16" which
looked like they were printed yesterday, but were nearly 100 years old.
The photo was taken in 1911, but they were not developed, or maybe not
printed? until they got back to the UK.
The difference in size (most of the Hurley pics were 8"x5" or similar,
with the Pontings at least 16x12) was because both expeditions presented
the Monarch with various artifacts when they returned, and it appears
the Scott expedition had enough money to do the prints justice, whereas
the Shackleton ones were presented in a book, so were far smaller.
It is certainly worth a visit, you have until the 15th April, smaller
than I expected, and I was hoping to see the 2 expeditions side by side,
but they are in different rooms, but , as the aforesaid difference in
size of the prints, it may not have looked good with a large pic, then a
small one etc.
London traffic - how do people live with that madness? I was on my bike
(got a parking place 100 metres or so from the Palace on Palace Road) ,
but it was gridlock from Lords to Hyde Park Corner. There was so much
traffic, I couldnt even filter for much of the route, a cyclist was at
the side of me and said the same - there wasnt even room for him to go
along the road next to the kerb.
Called into a pub, £3 for half a pint and a packet of crisps - not even
a 'large/grab bag' packet. I'm glad to be in the Midlands!
