For once, genuine help needed.

I am bringing my Manx Girlfriend over to the UK to see my folks for a few
days at the end of the month. They live near Woburn and the missus wants a
visit to London for a couple of days.

I have arranged a nights stay in a hotel near Hyde Park, but what I want to
know is:

What, really, are the best things to go to for a couple of days of
sightseeing and general touristism visit to the capital, without falling for
the tourist trap stuff.

I have not been to London for years, amd would not have a clue where to
start. London Eye maybe?

Anyone help please?

London Eye is a must see but remember to book. Nice walks to be had
along the Embankment maybe look in at Tate Modern, the Wobbly Bridge
and St Paul's. Other than that, avoid Leicester Square[1]. The
museums if you get time and the million other things one can do....

Definitely. Tate Modern is just a short walk away if you're into that,
Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus, and Regents Street (all women
like shops, even Manx ones) if you're not.

You could probably spend the best part of a day mooching round the South
Bank. The London Eye is brilliant, but book in advance to save queueing.
Good by day, even better by night. While you're nearby, the London Aquarium
is right behind the Eye, right behind it, and the Saatchi Gallery is just
above that.

The Tate Modern is then just down the embankment (very funky exhibit in the
turbine hall at the moment), and you can walk across the no-longer-wobbly
bridge to the other side and back.

She'll probably like all the little shops around Seven Dials in Covent
Garden - you can probably leave her there with a credit card while you nip
up Tottenham Court Road and look at gadgets ...

Please spare a thought for the locals. I like gadgets and work in Tottenham

warned.

The Eye is excellent - if you get a good day! HMS Belfast & Tower Bridge are
good & close to each other. The Cabinet War rooms are good (in Horse
Guards). Imperial War museum is close by as well.

Don't forget the frog tour. That's a bus that goes in and out of water.
It does a quick road tour and then drives into the Thames and you get
shown loads of little known things. I remember this because that's the
last thing I did before I binned my bandit.

Oh, perhaps not such a good choice ;-)

Last time I went to London someone threatened me for "looking at them
funny", so try "looking at people funny" for hours of jovial banter with
street pikeys.

Arrange to go drinking with UKRM, you'll be amazed how polite they all
are to your girlfriend.

Catch one of the last trains on the Northern line for a thrilling
exparience, feel the fear and smell the wee, it's like a special theme
park. Once you reach the end of the line get the night bus back into
town for twice the fun.

The next day you'll need some smelly home made egg sandwiches, and head
over to Broadgate Circle (near liverpool st. station) I think they have
ice skating on this time of year. Stand on one of the higher levels
eating the egg sandwich and allow bits of it to drop down, on financial
types. They'll love it as they usually don't have time for lunch, this
will make you feel charitable.

Buy a bottle of fairy washing up liquid and put it in the fountains at
trafalgar square, they get dirty this time of year and the street
pikeys you met earlier always need somewhere to wash.

Go to Jamie Oliver's restaurant and demand to eat only the food made
from the products he buys at Sainsbury's. Afterwards tell him the meal
is pukka.

Ride in a taxi and tell the driver he sounds just like that chimney
sweep bloke out of Mary Poppins.

Finally go to Buckingham Palace and demand to see the queen, they may
not let you in initially but there's a secret phrase you need to know.
Find one of the tour guides wearing red, they usually wear a large hat,
and say the following words: "I am a follower of Osama Bin Laden, take
me to the queen now or fire will rain down from the heavens. You western
dog!". They will then accompany you to the secret palace entrance.

If the queen likes you you'll be allowed to stay at her place for a
while free of charge! How cool is that?

Tower of London/ Tower Bridge (just walk around it)
The monument/ St Pauls
Tube to Baker street.
Trafalgar Square/ National Gallery
Walk down to Downing Street and the Houses of Parliment
Then walk to Buck Palace then through Green park turn right and have tea in
The Ritz.

Apart from The Ritz (£50 ish) the rest is free!

One thing I'd add; if anyone is going to write anything on Usenet, say
like a wite up of how my suggestions turn out, it's a good idea to proof
read the text before hitting send. The kind of punctuation a fuckwit
like me 'just types with' is horrible - it doesn't even scan when I read
it back to myself.

Giving up drinking has made me notice this. :-/

It is fun. Don't let the freeboard thing put you off. It leaves from
right outside the London eye just off York road. About eight quid a
ticket IIRR.

others have suggested a good range of things.

But what does your bird actually like?

A few have recommended the Tate Modern, but if she's in any way arty,
don't forget the National Gallery, at Trafalgar Square - this is also
free to get into and has fuckloads of "real" art.

You don't have old buildings on the Island do you? If you're
interested in those, and are visiting the Tate Modern, walk across the
footbridge and keep going in a straight line - you'll come to St.Pauls
and Paternoster Square - nice contrast of pretty old and very new
architecture. Also, loads of old Hawksmoor churches etc. around the
city.

If she's not into that sort of thing at all, then just take the bitch
shopping, though I'd try Covent Garden/Seven Dials rather than Oxford
street unless you want either of a) shops you can get anywhere else or
b) pikey "bargain" shops with some "cockney" wanker offering "great
deals" of a shitty saucepan set and dodgy camera, your's for only 50

Yeah, London Eye is great. Look for the twin TV masts of Ally Pally to
the north and Crystal Palace to the south. And it can act as a good
starting point for a very interesting and non-touristy tour:

Along the South Bank to the east from London Eye (that's away from
Waterloo) there's the National Theatre with a big bookfair out on
stalls (under cover), MOMI, Hayward's Gallery, and further along,
great views of St. Paul's. Trot along to Gabriel's Wharf for
food/drink/new age knick-knack shops. I've walked all the way along to
Tower Bridge - this walk takes in the Tate Modern, the Globe Theatre,
the replica Golden Hind, Southwark Cathedral (older and more
interesting than you would think) and Borough Market (smoked eels,
exotic olives, free range bacon, organic vegs etc.), with a tiny
detour to the George Inn (Elizabethan, galleried), London Bridge,
Tower Bridge (The Tower, HMS Belfast, London Dungeon (if it's still
open)). Then you could get a boat back up or go on to Bermondsey and
the Mayflower. Or, from The Tower, you are into the City, the
Monument, St Paul's etc.

found it fascinating. Mind you, there's no actual guns there.

aftertaste of asphalt and a heady nose of dog semen" or whatever.
