It ain't just lorry drivers though. Always annoys me, but I generally
pull into lane 2 and put my mains on before comitting myself.

Probably because they don't need them on main, they just aren't going fast
enough.

There's an opposite for this...... Why do 99% of motorcyclists drive on
main beam, or have the lights set so high they might as well be. And I'm
*not* taking the piss.

Maybe you're right, percentage wise there are more car drivers with lights
set all over the place.

Round here it's more likely to have a car with no fucking lights on at
all, rather than badly set.

I reckon on encountering 3 or 4 a week on the way home.

How do they do it?

How, I can't help with.

Why - I hard one cunt claim he regularly drove at night with no lights so that
he could see other traffic coming the other way, then, as he drove like a cunt
on the wrong side of the road, he could moderate and stay on his own side.

The only sensible thing to do is to make all vehicle users pass a test
in all types of vehicle within two years of passing the first one.

Not a full test, just a test of basic competency so everyone
appreciates what other drivers/riders are having to put up with.

Once we've got that lot sorted out we can pass a law making it legal
to kill cyclists who get in the way of anyone paying road tax.

No, I think you'll find I'm good at it. I'm not the best, but I've put a
lot of work in to make sure I'm better than most. What's the point doing

Based on what? Whose opinion, other than your own? What aspect of
driving? Vehicle control on the road? Race track? Dirt? If on the
road, how do you know you're in good control? Observeance of the law/
good practice/ courtesy? Measured how?

I don't personally claim any special driving prowess BTW; I'm almost
certainly on the average side of average. But I've never measured it.
I *have* had an obseved m'cycle rideout, which went reasonably well,
but that's all since my test.

Because they're being trained by Yorkie munchers?

It's obvious really because people wanting to take their motorcycle
test are trained by motorcyclists and the pass rate is pretty high.

Wannabe big fat truckers are trained by big fat truckers and the fail
rate is pretty high.

I'm an expert in road driving. IAM advanced, IAM Observer, 50,000 miles
a year business driver for over 20 years and general road driving
enthusiast. As I've said, I'm not the best, but I think you'll agree my
extra training and vast experience qualifies me more than most who don't
do anything other than pass a basic test.

I don't claim anything superhuman and I'm certainly not what you would
call a naturally good driver, but I've put the work in, so that
qualifies me to have more of an opinion than some people on this group
(uk.r.d) who mock from the sidelines.

That explains why the standard of riding in this country is so low.

Are you fuck as like. Anyone who thinks, and especially boasts, that
they're an "expert" driver is no such thing, almost by definition.

The only real "experts"[1] I've talked to would never make such a
claim.

[1] And by this I'm referring to top plod instructors, not IAM
wannabees.

What's an *IAM Observer*? Is it someone who

But who, like Ray Keatch and "Silk" consider themselves to be God's gift
to driving.

Although Ray hasn't quite managed to work up to Silk's level of
self-delusion yet. Silk is fairly "special" in his claims that he is
such a superior driver that in his hands a Skoda Octavia diseasel
repmobile becomes better than the best that is offered for sale by any
"premium" manaufacturer such as BMW, Audi, Jaguar, Porsche etc.

And of course there's his extensive driving experience to consider. That
is, his daily commute from Cribbs Causeway to Newport.

Maybe its because the HGV driving test is twice as long so people who

Judging by the standard of non-HGV drivers I came across in my HGV
driving career, I'd say that there were far more none HGV dribbling
inbred fuckwits than HGV driving ones. Visit any food factory and the
number of non-HGV driving dribbling fuckwits outnumbered the HGV ones
100:1.

As an (ex) HGV driver, can you answer the original question? If you
didn't see it, the gist was why do the vast majority of HGV drivers
never use full beam at night, thus making it much harder for the
cars/bikes stuck behind them to overtake as they can't see when there's
a straight bit of road ahead?

I'd guess that being professional drivers they know they're making it
harder for people, so is it just that they like keeping everyone behind
them, or are they just too lazy to flick between full & dip? It is a
serious question btw.

I'm an expert car driver - I've never claimed to be an expert in or on
any other type of vehicle - please try to keep up. The only thing that
concerns me regarding other types of vehicle is avoidance.

I don't subscribe to the view that learning to drive one particular road
vehicle teaches you how to drive another. I know that lorries are heavy
and slow and bikes are light and fast - both likely to be driven/ridden
by morons and best avoided for similar reasons. What else do I need to know?

If you were that good a car driver, you would know
and want to know more about M/bikes and lorries
and how they may affect you and your car driving.
Passing a motorcycle test gives a car driver a
better understanding of what it's like from a
m/cyclists point of view.
Believe me, it helps.
