I'd have recomended the Apple i-Pod (it's the only piece of Apple kit I'd
touch), but it fits none of your criteria, its Mac only at the moment, and
is about £350, so I'll just get my coat then.

My mate picked up a dandy wee MP3 player, but I can't remember the name of
it. I'll see him tomorrow when at work so I'll ask him then.

Depend what yer looking for, players fall into 3 categories:
Solid state - very small, light, 64 to 256Mb (about the size of a pack
of 10 fags)
Hard drive - bigger (about the size of an early Walkman) 4-10Gb
Disc players - look like cd players but play mp3's on disc 600Mb

If you want to wear one while jogging, you need solid state really.
Even with 2min jog protection the others may skip.

There may also be other considerations (e.g. do you want an FM radio
function, removable media etc.)

I've got Creative Nomad II MG which has 196Mb and was 130quid, but
it's discontinued.

I've been no help at all really...

I bought an Nokia 3330e Orange phone upgrade for £20 just before Christmas,
and the girl in the shop offered me the Nokia Music Player for another £20.
She said it was worth around £200, but was a special offer, so I don't know
if you could still get one at that price.

You can use it as an MP3/AAC player, it has a built in FM tuner, and you can
connect it to a few Nokia phones and use it as a handsfree kit at the same
time. Not on a bike though - the mic is on the player, not the headphones
cable. Comes with 32Mb MMC memory card, and works with XP. The only trouble
is that I don't particularly rate its durability - it feels a little flimsy.
Also, I don't like the nasty in-ear 'phones it comes with, but then I've
never got on with those (small lug-'oles you see!)

See http://www.nokia.com/phones/3330/musicplayer.html

Latest Creative DVD player is now fitted with a 20GB hard drive,
Dixons do not seem to know about it, but have got the 6GB version on
sale for 200 notes.

Both are XP compatable. see http://www.nomadworld.com/

Interestingly What HiFi think that is a solid state device.....

Maybe not that interesting actually.

I bought SWMBO a Nike Play 120 64M MP3 Player. She runs a lot so it
needed to be a solid-state device to prevent skipping. It cost just
over £150 from http://www.scan.co.uk/mp3.htm and was delivered the
next day.

The quirky software provided is a bit shakey on XP but I'm starting to
think it was more to do with a dodgy USB lead (or socket) because
after a bit of fiddling with the cable it worked fine. I was able to
load a couple of CD's worth of music onto the player.

I just bought a Creative Labs DAP for 199.99ukp. It has 6gb of memory :-)
and it works with XP.
