It's not new, of course, people have been using them for years, but this
is the first time I've actually played with one.

Shame that spec-wise it's out performed by a 400D.

Not by much and it was a third of the price for a nearly new box. I can
live without the extra 4MP of the 400 - 6MP is enough for now. In a
couple of years the price of some of the higher pixel-count ones like
the 5D will fall within reach. The full frame of the 5D appeals too.
It opens up a new range of clicking for me and a chance to re-use some
of the good old OM-fit lenses I have kicking around. Feck, even the old
Zeiss flashgun works on it.
[1] I never buy new cameras - like all other male jewellery, as soon as
it's out the box it's value plummets like a wounded pheasant, to be
picked up second hand at something like it's true value a mere year or
two later. Often s/h cameras have had little use by the previous owner,
as in this case.

How do you achieve that then?
And surely it negates the 'auto-everything' which is the main benefit of
modern cameras?
>Feck, even the old Zeiss flashgun works on it.
Any flash with an hotshoe will work, but again you will be limited to a
certian range of shutter speeds, and no auto-exposure.
I've just been looking for a dedictated flash for mine, still £150+ on
ebay, so it'll have to wait for a while still.

Indeed it was. Not a bad one, either.

Adapters available on ebay which, with some electrickery, manage to fool
the EOS trickery too, allowing me to use an OM lens in manual mode.

Auto-everything is for poofs and always has been. I'm compromising my
principles enough by buying a camera which relies 100% on batteries,
never mind the lens, ffs. Oh, I admit, it's very seductive just pointing
and pressing, but it lacks a certain something.
Just like a hair shirt, some would say.

Now that's where the smart sensor in the Zeiss wins out - not a modern
all-singing and dancing flash, but one that will sear the eyeballs out
of subject if you let it. It's got a nifty slider on the back you simply
select distance, focal length and aperture on and the sensor adjusts the
power to suit. All before chips with everything took hold.
The results with that have always been good, especially in bounce wiv
fill-in.
I find the on-board flash is surprisingly good for smaller indoor stuff
- fairly decently controlled output for a wee one.

I use M42 stuff on my 400D, lovely old Zeiss,Takumars and Russian stuff
like Jupiters and MIRs, sod all cash and optically superb. My adaptor even
has the AF conf chip on it so the lights 'flash' when I hit focus on each
zone.

Yep, I think this one's supposed to do something similar...

Looks like he's not pleased at the cheaper (by two quid!) copies.
Then I found the same bloke does a direct Tamron Adaptall2/EOS ring...
URL:http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150131297571
Which allows me to get that useable right away.
There's so much great quality glass out there for peanuts, as you say. I
must have a look around for more stuff.

I'm sure you could make yourself one of those adapters from an old bean
can.

That's not a dead mouse. Do a search for phenylketonuria and "mousy smell"
and check out some of the other symptoms.

If you're talking Minolta AF lenses, they will (or are at least
supposed to) fit the Sony Alpha. Minolta MF/MD stuff however won't.

Bad form, blah.
While looking at the Takumars 'n stuff, I came across this cheap shite
copy of a Canon Big Gun...

Have a look at the 'demo' shots, pics 8, 9, 10.
Way to sell the product, ffs. What a piece of crap.

No, I was just bullshitting. Des can't have PKU as it never affects
Ashkenazi Jews.
Pity, as everything else fits. It is genetic, common in Ireland and SW
Scotland,
causes mental problems, and makes you smell like a dead mouse when you
overindulge
(as you might when Bastille Day coincides with the Sabbath).
There's just that one thing that spoils the theory.
