As anybody who saw my bike this weekend will know my RHS fairing is
looking a bit of a mess after gaining the lived-in look, courtesy of a
sheep last August.

I bought a 2nd hand panel a few weeks ago, which is an easier repair job
than mine, but, in a fit of twatishness, the previous owner repaired[1]
and painted part of it.

And the part they painted they managed to paint the wrong colour[2]

So, I need to know ...

1. Will I have to go to Kwasaki to get a spray paint in the right
colour or is somewhere else likely to be able to do a good job of colour
matching based on the existing panel.

2. After painting will some sort of laquer be required to finished the
job off?

Anybody or are you all still reeling from the shock of seeing an
on-topic post from me?

[1] When I say "repaired" I mean they melted cable-ties over the back
of the crack, with limited success.

[2] They were obviously from the "red is red" school of colour
selection.

Who are you again? Are you the bloke who goes to rallies and has a
big beard, or are you the fat bloke out of The Commitments? I can
never remember.

So long as you have the colour code, any good paint firm should be able
to make up a batch. When I got some for the SV I got the paint code
from a sticker on the subframe, under the seat. Checked it online and
it all seemed right. I went to AutoPaint (I think) in Bolton. The chap
came out, had a look at the bike, and told me what colour undercoat I'd
need as well.

The painting process goes along the lines of sanding down the entire
panel with increasingly fine grades of wet-n-dry, apply primer (2 coats)
apply basecoat (2-3 coats), apply colour coat (2-5 coats), apply lacquer
(2-4 coats). Took about 2 weeks.

I played about painting the lids of the spray cans to get the delivery
and number of coats right. With the "candy" paint on the SV it didn't
shine until the lacquer went on the top, but which time it's too late to
put more colour on. Testing before you go through with it is vital to
get a good match.

As far as stickers go, I taped over them and went round them, but that's
because there was only 2 small SV650 logos, and they weren't that
jagged. If the panel is covered in stickers you may have to get a decal
set.

So, are you off to ebay for a new panel, or what?

Most body shops should be able to come up with the correct paint code
from the frame plate...

That would be the normal procedure, ask to be sure...>
