My wife has just bought a 1987 Yamaha FZR 750 Genesis which was a Japanese
import to the UK. The bike is in excellent condition but we are surprised by
the fact that it has a Kilometer/hr speedo which runs out a 190 kph - about
115mph. The bike will do 70 mph at 5,000 rpm in top gear and as it red lines
at 12,000 rpm should go to at least 140mph. Why the slow speedo? Could the
bike be restricted for the Japanese markte and if so how could I derestrict
it?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Don't know about the FZR750. Though, from what I recall, several years
back the early European model FZR1000 (pre EXUP) was theoretically
restricted to 100bhp due to a gentlemans agreement between eurocrats
and Yamaha. De-restriction was simply a matter of removing the inlet
rubbers, between carb and cylinder head, and cutting away a gate
moulded into the inlet path with a Stanley knife. Maybe worth looking
into though check that the mixture is OK after this procedure by doing
a few plug chops incase you need to re-jet.

It would still go a sight faster than 115mph with 100bhp though.

It sounds like Grey (as opposed to Parallel) importitis. The Japs restrict
all their home market bikes to 112Mph. Foreign exports are restricted
depending on their target market. I think German bikes are also restricted,
but could be talking complete bollocks. However, imports to Britain are all
full power.

As to de-restriction, it depends a lot on the bike. My NC30 has a rev
limiter which pulls it up at 13,000 - 112Mph. You can buy a black box from
someone like M-Max for about 50 quid that just plugs into the wiring loom to
de-restrict it. I don't know about the FZR though, try giving a grey
importer a call - look in the back of any of the bike mags for addresses.

I read

>>which runs out a 190 kph - about 115mph.

to mean the numerals ran out rather than that's what it's top speed
was.

The bike is restricted by ignition programing and by intake restriction. Carb manifold has rubber in one area that can be cut out.

It's a mystery why a 1990s 750 would be restricted.
The French version perhaps? Or was the 33bhp category in place twenty years ago?
The thousand had a hymen in the intake stubs for the UK market but that was in 1990.

Had an E reg blue & white FZR750 about 1990 which didn't feel restricted, second hand from Japan via a bulk auction needing UK reg etc.

The only odd things were a red light that came on at a set speed and I think the indicators were continually on when not in use.

Once got it up to just over 150mph. Not as torquey as my VFR but a shade quicker and suspension harder. I think I got an mph clock inner, off an FZ, luckily with the same ratio. From (my crap) memory I think the round clock can be separated without destroying the rim, so quite easy fix.

You don't think he might have got rid of the bike by now?

Curious. Do your headers show different to others ?

I've looked at mine and they show that there is an "injection date" of
Dec 3 2016

Or do you have the original in your news feed ?? :-)
