I've just heard that the Motorcycle chain Colin Collins have gone into
administration. They have been going for 40 years and have/had 4 branches.
The Letchworth branch is still trading but the other three, Harrow, Watford
and Kenton have closed. The administrators are trying to sell it as a going
concern.

No wonder I got a great deal on my bike.

There's nothing on the website yet.

My 9R came from the Harrow branch - it's only 15 mins walk from my gaff.
Damn! I'm going to have to find somewhere else to MOT/service it now.

I'll go past on the way home and see if there're any notices up, etc.

Lloyd Cooper in Watford?

All used bikes have 15% off and the new ones they own also.

It's probably the best option. I work in Slough now and can get a
service done at the place down the road from work but they don't do
MOTs unfortunately.

It was handy being able to drop the bike off and wander home for an
hour or two while they worked on it, too.

that's odd, because you'd think the very first thing a bike
dealership would do if it went into receivership is update it's
fucking website.

Yeah, fair point.

I went past the Harrow branch tonight and there was a notice on the
door saying something like "Closed Wednesday 17th for stocktaking -
open as usual Thursday 18th"

Assuming the online entity is the same company; if it's a Ltd company
being used as a holding company, as an outlet for stock from the shop
(as some eBay outlets do), then it wouldn't be illegal in itself,
although the act of punting out items from the shop's stock to the
online entity would, I *think* (not 100% sure) be a no-no, insofar as
the receiver might take a dim view; might render the directors liable to
disqualification, IIRC, BICBW.

IIRC it's illegal to take on credit, sell goods not belonging to you under a
retention of title, give credit to customers. Knowing the way the merchant
services work they are probably owed money so trading with credit cards
might pose a problem if they are insolvent. Don't forget, they are not in
liquidation even though administration could be seen as a precursor. Trading
under administration is OK providing the administrators are controlling it.
My guess is they don't know about the website yet.

In the Farepak case, and Escom years ago IIRC, the banks held onto cash in
the credit card clearing system once they became aware of the trading
situation. This was then refunded to customers under the Consumer Credit
Act protection.

In another place, a UKRM denizen has posted about paying a 50% deposit on a
KTM to C Collins by debit card. Ouch.

You could try painting the scooter, then you might be able to sneak up
on the shop before they spotted you and closed down.

It might also stop people trying to destroy it [1].

[1] Judging from the photos of the scooter, it has already been
destroyed, so I really should say "get it off the road, permanently".

Managed to get to the letchworth branch today, all appeared normal AFAICT
Managed to get a full face ACU approved Caberg V2 for £75 which seemed
reasonable to me, I is happy.

Ah!

Still not the brightest move. And I *know* my financial approach is
quaint, but this is the classic way of getting stuffed on a deal. Always
use a credit card.

Coincidentally, Ive just got a refund on mine after some interbooze firm
didn't come up with the goods.

My ex booked a holiday for her and the kids online with her debit card,
the firm went tits up - she got a full refund all the same. I hear that
the govt has put things in place to protect debit card users against
this sort of thing.

I'll be seeing her soon, I'll ask what she did to get her refund.

Do that - I'd be interested. Of course, there are all sorts of
safeguards and bond schemes to protect people who buy holidays. Could
have been one of those?

Nothing beats the Consumer Credit Act, though, IMHO.

Had a vfr750 for 2 years, always found HGB in Ruislip are ok for
servicing and MOTs- never bought from them thought.
- not too far from Watford. Think its www.hgbmotorcycles.co.uk

Hope this helps, Cheers, Paul.

PS - anyone know if CC has been bought yet?

Not yet but they are working on it.

The Letchworth and Harrow branches are still open.

There's 25% off all clothing now as well.
