There is a better way to find free overnight parking in the UK. You need a
copy of the Ordinance Survey 1:50,000 scale maps in a format that will work
with a GPS system on a laptop. The maps show many parking areas, not all are
suitable as some have height barriers, but many are worth checking. Also
with the detailed maps you can see places that may be promising to check
out. With this list and by doing the above, we free camped every night for
six weeks while touring National Trust houses in May-June 2007. It can be
done, you just have to try, we were 12 thousand miles from home, so local
knowledge wasn't a factor, and if two Australians can do it so can you. We
found a place to stop every night without having to go too far out of our
way on route to the next National Trust property.
Campsites didn't suit us,
because often they were a long way from the route we wanted to travel. and
also they charge money. This was a great problem, not because I don't have
any, but I like to keep as much of it as possible, because my childhood
comic book hero was Scrooge McDuck! In a campervan you have all the
facilities you need, you don't need another toilet, we have one, you don't
need another shower, we have one, so why PAY a campsite, at a place you
don't want to go, for what you already have? Makes no sense to pay where you
don'r want to go, when you can free camp not far from the route you are
following. We were never moved on by or bothered by the police, generally we
only stayed one night, except for a few places we returned to for a second
night.
