DECLINE OF MODELCRAFT
What of Modelcraft Limited?
They continued to produce plans and the 4mm Lineside kits and
occasionally advertised the surviving stocks of single card railway
Micromodels. It was likely, however, that Airfix and other plastic kits
were taking a major share of the market by the late '50s.
In 1960, the business was acquired by E Rankine Gray of Bournemouth. He
was of course the specialist for card rolling stock requisites and, from
his 1955 catalogue, it appears that he was a main stockist for both
Modelcraft and Micromodels. He may have acted as a wholesaler as well.
Certainly, the products would have well complemented his own lines.
The ERG business continued until 1972 when Gray retired. At length the
stock resurfaced at a new model business under the ERG name and which
operated in Dover between 1979 and 1986. It was, apparently, founded on
the residual stocks of the ERG concern, including large quantities of
the single sheet lorries and locos printed in the late '40s. These were
sold off at railway exhibitions and other shows but a substantial amount
of them still turn up at swapmeets. Again, the initial production must
have been hugely overoptimistic.

The guy in Dover who took over Skinley drawings was called Archer and skinley
drawings can be had from The Sussex Modeller who advertises regularly in RM.
I have quite a large collection of 4mm road vehicle drawings (Bus coach and
lorry) which I used to sell back in the 70s and can provide copies if anyone is
interested. They were drawn to 4mm scale rather than photographically reduced
from a larger scale so they are a bit primitive but quite accurate.
They were available from someone who lived at Archers Court road Dover !
They were not drawings as such rather, printed coloured on light card to cut
out and make up.
