Has anyone got a contact name/address/phone number for Modern Motive Power?
Has anyone built any of their kits - in particular the Class 60 and Class
08? What are they like to build?

Cheers,
Mick

Dear Mick,

I think that MMP may be out of production, the range certainly changed
hands a year or two ago.
As I think that you may be a member of the Guild, why not try the Guilds
mail list service - available to Guild Members only - just send your
enquiry to gu...@gauge-o-guild.demon.co.uk. somebody in the list may
have more info.

one and I'm not sure that i've got the whole story.

Firstly, the Class 60 featured in the Summer 1998 copy of Model Rail which
referred to 'David J Parkins as the owner of Modern Motive Power, the
manufacturer of the kit being tested.' Interestingly, there was no MMP advert
in the magazine which either suggests that Mr P is not too hot on marketing or
he only produces for sale through the trade.

I think that the latter is the case.

You could ask Model Rail (01733 898100). Shame that they are not on e-mail!

I have also checked in the latest O Gauge journal. Again no advert for MMP
but their products are listed in the adverts for Home of 'O' Gauge (0181 540
8808) and West Coast Kit Centre (01752 880234). Again no e-mail addresses. I
am sure that there are other suppliers but I have no information.

I am interested in building the Class 08 and I would be interested in knowing
how you get on if you go for this one.

Richard

Model Rail are now on email. Their address is: chris.leigh.@ecm.emap.com

(yes, there is a dot before the @ sign)

It's the Railway modeller that are not on email. Not only that but they
still will not let advertisers advertise their Website address.

Just wanted to get that little bit in!!.

I rang the number as listed back in a June 92 GOG gazette and got an
automatic message for "the number has been changed to" 01202 536502
I rang this number and got MMP - they were most helpful and had a pleasant
chat about their kits. At present they only do a 60, 47 and 08, but have a
31 and 33 in preparation for possible release, possibly later this year.
Whoever owns MMP mainly deals in military models and that is their main
priority/money earner - the railways are done on and "as and when" basis.
Cheers,
Mick

In Reply,

Modern Motive Power is certainly not out of business, nor has it
changed hands. We have currently three loco kits only, available -
with many more under development. Next ones are Class 92, Class 33,
Class 56 & Class 57.

Details of our current kits - Classes 08, 47 & 60 can be had by post or
e-mail. We supply a by-return mail order service worldwide -
Visa/Mastercard/Switch.

I never said MMP had changed hands, only some of the range which is
certainly true.

A bit of history:

Mr Parkins range of Diesels was as far as I know originally bought by
RJH but is now in the hands of Wagon and Carriage Works. The Steam Locos
produced later, were sold to someone else but seem to have disappeared
for the moment.

In O Gauge the ranges of kits change hands so frequently it is difficult
to keep track of who is producing what and what the history is.

Are these brand new kits from MMP or the old originals? We would like to
know. Has anybody built any? What are they like? I would like to know
in case I get asked to build one.

> Our original range of diesel kits was 'Post-War Prototypes', sold to
RJH in June and September 1988. Modern Motive Power was started in
November 1988, and the Class 08 shunter introduced at that time [with
mods to accept the Slaters Wheels - not then available] is the same kit
we still produce. The Class 47 & 60 kits were added in 1993 & 1996
respectively. These were all new kits at the point of release, and are
not connected in any way with the Carriage & Wagon/ex-RJH/ex-PWP range.

Our Modern Motive Power range of Steam Locomotives was sold in 1992 to
Andy Beaton Model Productions.

Our range of modern Scenic Accessories and Pacer units was sold to Dave
Lowery in 1993, and most of these are still available from him. We
also sold him the Class 421 & 423 EMUs, but these now reside with
Carriage & Wagon.

Our range of smaller shunters - Class 03, 07 & Sentinel Shrewsbury were
sold in 1994 to Eric Underhill, who in turn has sold his entire range
[including the shunters] to ABS Models.

All I was saying in my original posting was that MMP has not changed
hands, and neither is it out of business. It prospers because it is
subsidised by our main model ranges of Aircraft and military kits and
sets.

I hope the above serves to clarify things.

Surely there have been some major changes in this kit? I thought that it
was originally made with an etched brass engine hood, but later changed
to a cast resin unit. Or have I got the wrong firm?

I know that Underhill did an 03, but I don't ever remember him doing an
07 or Sentinel.

in the kit. The current three-piece resin bonnet [or the earlier one-
piece one] were moulded from a master which was constructed using
etchings from the original version [which did have an all-metal
bonnet]. But I repeat, it is the same kit [we were asked as to the
origins of the kit by Mr. Freeman] in terms of detail level &
construction - apart from that simple change, and indeed we offered
both resin & metal hood options of the kit for a period [though not
now].

As to the Class 07 & Sentinel. Maybe Eric Underhill didn't put them
out, but he certainly paid us for the kit tooling, and these are now
owned by ABS Models. However I do know that Eric did sell them both
for a time, because he sold off all the stock that came with the
purchase of the range.
