I realise that Railway Modeller publishes various plans every month. Is
there a list of these plans available so that I can order back issues?
I have the address of Isinglass Models, but their plans are limited to LNER
prototypes. Can anyone suggest any other good sources, particularly for
Skinley plans?
The plans which I am particularly looking for are Brittania, 9F, Bullied
Light Pacifics and Austerity 2-8-0s.
Thanks in advance

One thing I would be cautious about is the accuracy and usability of Skinley
blueprints. For their day they were good but their day was a while ago.
Now you haven't said what scale you are working in, but the combination of
"realtively new to the hobby", scratchbulding and the types you have listed
don't seem to fit well. All fo these are quite complex subjects, and using
any of these as a fisrt or even second or third attempt would seem likely to
result in frustration and a change of hobby. This come from bitter
experience, my first scratchbuild was a narrow guage pacific NZR class Ab),
and it took something like five years to finish to a standard where I was
happy with it. I didn't have the choice of a kit or RTR model to kitbash at
that stage so I damn well had to scratchbuild.
If you particularly want to scratchbuild, then I'd really suggest that you
go for something less complex - inside cylinders (or at least inside valve
gear), round top firebox and a continuos footplate are very helpful in
lining up the work.
The combination of boiler hung running boards, taper boilers and outside
gear make most of your selections quite problematic subjects even for
experienced builders. Even the can around an unrebuilt Bulleid has some
rather awkward shapes that need panel beating skills of quite a high level.

I've completed Schools class and Prairie tank models from the plans in
Railway Modeller, with a Black 5 and Class 37 diesel almost complete. If
anyone is interested in seeing the results, please let me know. If binaries
are acceptable on this group, I will post them here. If not, suggest a
viable group and I will post them there.
I know it's a little out of the ordinary.... ! I started (as do most
people) by building spaceships from Star Trek and the like. However, I
wanted to build something that was real and a little more of a challenge. I
noticed a copy of Railway Modeller on the shelf at my local newsagent....
and now I'm hooked !!!

Why don't you post to alt.binaries.pictures.rail ?
Please feel free to let me know what you think.

You might have a look at the BRMNA web site which has an index of
articles in the British model railway magazines :-
http://www.magi.com/~brmna/xrefs.htm
You could also try contacting the NRM in York which holds the archive
of the official drawings of locomotives from pre-grouping days.

All the pics that I've done were created in tS2 as I don't need the advanced
animation facilities in the latest version.
I think an interesting project would be to build models of locos that no
longer exist, for instance the Grange class... any other suggestions ?

No it shouldn't be too expensive. A lot of the magazines give away old or
trial versions which you can upgrade if you like it.
On the other hand the programs like Lightwave and 3D Studio Max, which are
used for most of the films, are very expensive about £2k and £3k
respectively!!
For a Truespace demo try http://www.caligari.com
Paul
peco did a small booklet with some of the plans reduced to 2mm scale and
a list of the drawings that Ian Beattie had drawn up to that date
(1994ish) I have OCR'd and then cleaned up the list but the print was
quite small so there may be a number of errors.

The June 1999 edition of Model Rail had a very good set of drawings for the
Light Bulleid pacifics
Back issues should still be available

Ideally what you need is a proper General Arrangement drawing with
DIMENSIONS (which the Model Rail ones don't have) of your chosen loco. That
said, you'll find complete scratchbuilding a bit hair-raising.
Could I suggest you get a feel for it by building one of the Comet
Models chassis kits intended for the Hornby Britannia body as a starter?
That way you'll get a neat finescale model that you can detail and finish
yourself at possibly a bit less than a full-out kit, while appreciating the
considerable effort and care needed to attack such a project "cold" with
just lots of brass sheet. You're certainly taking on a lot to go for a large
tender loco as a first project.
Some of the Wild Swan books are worth study - there's one on building
whitemetal and etched kits and one that covers what I've suggested above.
East Kent Models and Modelspares of Burnley are both good sources for Hornby
and Bachman mouldings with which to start. (My Britannia body, all £1.50
worth, came this morning...)
It goes without saying that you needs plenty of pics from preserved
railways and/or Steam World etc., to reconcile your model as the works
thought they built it, with what actually operated - that's where the real
detail work takes place. In particular, get down to Wansford quick if you
want to snap 70000 Britannia in close-up, as Pete Waterman's moving her to
Crewe for a rebuild real soon...
