I'm trying to buy the correct size tubing to extend the centre pin of Peco
point motors so I can mount them under the baseboard. I've got extra 'pin'
(v.thick piano wire) but not the 'sleeve' to join the extension up.

Is there anyone out there with a micrometer that can tell me the gauge of
the pin (or who knows the correct size 'sleeve'/tubing to use? I'm reliant
on mail order for this sort of thing and want to order the right stuff.

Cheers anyone,

Just measured a motot, pin diameter 1.2mm, tube OD 2mm.
Hope this helps.

Contact Peco - they will generally supply the extension packs (usually
foc) - but you do know they now supply the point motor with a longer
activating pin (PL-10E)?

Thanks John and Martin for those very quick responses!!

I didn't know Peco did the point motors with longer pins - trouble is I've
got loads of motors, more than I need in fact owing to buying a job lot, and
they're all the short pin variety.

But if Peco will supply a few extension sets than that's super!!

Cheers again, and have a good w/e.

You could always remove the existing short pin and replace it with
1.2mm dia piano wire to what ever custom length you want. I found that
the extension sleeve leaves too much slop in the movement.

Yes, quite right. This is because the existing short pin and the

extension pin supplied are believe it or not different diameters. I have

never actually measured them to find the difference, but the extension piece

is definitely a smaller diameter! This makes the instructions next to
useless, as I recall, because it suggests crimping with a pair of
pliers. This leaves the whole thing loose and likely to fall out - On
its way to an exhibition!
The best solutions in order
1/ Try another point motor brand
2/ Buy the long length to start with - assuming the long length ones are
not short ones with the sleeve etc. Can't remember.
3/ Buy some wire of the correct diameter to match the short ones.
4/ Araldite the parts together
5/ Super glue them together - but expect some to fall out!

If you are using the accessory switch as well, make sure the point motor is

accurately aligned to the centre. Otherwise the additional friction
(unbalanced) will cause the point motor to not throw the point
completely on one side. These switches are dodgy at the best of times,
but with care they can be made to work.
The double pole variety (the red ones), I found, won't work with the
extension shaft. The whole thing just has too much flex in it.

Good Luck

2a/ Get replacement armatures from PECO, i.e. ones with the long
pin, and replace the short pin ones. I've done this to quite a few
fro our club, it's a fiddly operation but not too difficult if done
with care. Somewhere I've got some pictures I keep meaning to add to
our web pages.

<various suggestions above from Andrew, Kevin, Chris & Len>

Right...well that's food for thought all that.

The point motors I have already installed have been used on other layouts
over a number of years but only now with acc switches. I bend the outside
tags of the motor at a point further up the motor, making the motor sit
almost on (under!) the baseboard. This means the extension is normally very
short and not that sloppy, and with araldite rather than super glue they've
all stayed in so far...

Peco TAB emailed me to say the extension sets are 5p each so I think I'll
try a few.

First I'll have to measure the pins though to see if they're 1mm or 1.2mm

Cheers everyone,
