Hi All.

I realize that the EFE Tube trains are un-motorised display models,
but I'm wondering if any provision has been made to fitting some form
of commercial motor bogie / bogies?
Also, does it have insulated wheels / axles?

I'd be grateful for any info. offered, if only because UK outline /
4mm scale is not something that I normally have any involvement with!

TIA David C.

Don't Metromodels do something? I'm tempted, myself (but it's maddening to
get something so close to RTR - although an EFE Oerlikon set will more than
suffice...)

I was wondering the same thing, since I have just received mine.
Metromdels at http://www.metromodels.freeserve.co.uk/efe.htm sell a
conversion kit with a Tenshodo motor at £39.99, including bogie frame
and instructions. Two are recommended for a 4-car train. A carriage with
one motor already installed sells for £69.50 (£27.50 unmotorised).

I think the model looks great, and would love to see it trundling around
my layout, but the motors are a bit pricey. The interior detail is quite
amazing, including driver controls (although not picked out in metallic
paint). The bodies are easy to remove, but the seating unit appears to
be superglued to the diecast base, hindering removal of the bogies.
Installing a motor would require cutting a hole in the metal base.

The wheels are not very free running, but the plastic retaining plate
can be removed from below and some grease-free lubricant applied, and
possibly Romford 10.5mm wheels substituted. The axles ride on a pice of
spring steel, and are insulated on one side, so this could potentially
be used for auxiliary current pickup. Plastic "couplers" are provided in
2 lengths; the short ones give a realistic spacing, but are barely long
enough for 18" radius curves. They snap, rather awkwardly, over tabs on
the bogies; I'm sure a better arrangement could be devised.

Has anybody out there tried to motorise one of these models yet?

I can't see why it shouldn't be possible to fit your own Tenshodo bogie.

Make sure you have free running wheels on all other bogies and put the motor
in the driving trailer with some weight.

Best of luck.

p.s. I'll be buying a set when the price comes down to Ł19.95

Further to my previous there may also be a Harrow Model Shop kit now, too.

Sales seem to be pretty good (or the shops have understocked); the driver
coaches look like they're going quickly, so fingers crossed.

To remove the seating unit, remove the under floor detailing unit which is
glued to the metal floor, exposing 4 screws. The axles are insulated on one
side so could be used for lighting.

Aha! Thank you. that's what I wanted to know.

And/or extra current pickups for the motor.
