Hi folks,
I have taken advantage of the Christmas break to dig out some of my
older Hornby models from the storage box. One of them is a Class 25
model of unknown vintage as I don't have the box anymore. I can tell you
it's one one of the first released in the 80's and has a plastic
coloured BR Blue with what looks to be a satin sheen sprayed over it.
The model is made in England.

I cleaned everything and gave it a very light oil. Everything was fine
until I let it run around my test track for a while. Now it makes a
screaching sort of noise over a certain speed and the model noticably
slows while the sound is audible. If I lower the speed then all is well
again. If I raise speed it will go ok for a while and then the screech
sound reappears and the model slows down. I am guessing it's something
to do with the gears, but guessing is all I'm doing.

Does anyone have any similar experience with these models and some tips
on what to look at to fix it?

Cheers,
Daniel Dacey

Dry motor bearings - slight spot of very light oil on each end of the
bearing will solve the problem.

I bet it's 25247 - mine does the same thing, and someone else I know with
the same loco has the same problem with it.

G'day All,
John is right, it sounds like dry bearings. There is one on either side of
the Locomotive. A drop of oil on both of shaft ends, should fix the problem.
One end is behind the Spur Gear on the side of the motor with the gears and
the other is between the Brush retaining arm assembly.
Be careful not to overoil as too much oil is as bad or worse then not
enough. If you are a bit heavy handed and over oil you can flush off the
excess oil with Lighter Fluid or Similar.

Hi John,
Gave it a better clean and oiled the bearing as you suggested. Runs like
new now.

Thanks,
Daniel

Hi Rich,
Yes it is. I followed Johns advice and oiled the bearing and it runs
like new now. Before I did that, I gently removed the ringfield motor
from the plastic bogie moulding, removed the wheels and then prised the
side of the ringfield motor off (same side as brushes). I was then able
to give it a good clean and oil to the bearing. Reassembled and it ran
like new. Took a little while to do as I didn't want to stuff it up, but
the results are well worth it.

Regards,
Daniel
