Well what an excellent show. I found it nice to see the smaller models more
in line with the average modeller ( not large scale). I was tempted enough
to purchase the Dave Smith Models 'Smart Move' anyone built one? any tips
before starting?
Watching some of the display teams flying like Pete Tindales etc.. I thought
well what will Christophe do? My jaw fell to the floor as soon as he took
off and it is still there. How the hell he can perform some of those
manoeuvres I am still trying to work out. Variable C of G? I have whacked up
the movements on my funfly and stuck lead in the tail one of these days I
will complete a rolling loop, I can get half way round before it goes a bit
Pete Tong!

Still I astounded Christophe with my ability to make a Pratt of myself when
I asked him for his signature on a poster only to be told by 'him', "I ezz
not Creestoff I am ezz father zat is emm", Umm..So that would be the
unassuming guy I pushed past to get a signature. DOHHH! I dug the hole just
cover me over.

I had much the same reaction, I sat in the grandstand genuinely
open-mouthed. My guess is that the Majestic is filled with helium, or it
was all a computer generated projection. It was unreal. It's not just his
awesome flying ability but the plane appears to be ignorant about gravity
and airflow.

A couple of clubmates & I commented on how flying at club level, you feel
like you are actually getting quite good at this flying lark......... Until,
that is you see Christophe and suddenly you realise how little we know.

It can be a very humbling experience.

If you need reminding what you saw there are some photos on my website (URL
in sig). I was impressed by the range of manoeuvers that he performed with
the Majestic. 3D-type, loops with the plane not actually seeming to move
through the air at one moment to "traditional" manoeuvers the next. The
rolling circle with *one* roll for the whole circle is the one that always
impresses me.

LOL! You certainly know how to make a good impression <VBG>

I noticed that the posters he was signing were the same as last year. I
commented on that and he produced some different ones from under the table.
Dunno whether they were new ones or ones from two years ago though!

I too was well impressed by Christophe. The only maneuvre I can't work out
is the falling one where his plane just falls flat like there's no air
underneath it.

I am building an Excelsior 163 and a friend is building a Smart Move.
General impression from both is that wood selection is not 100% perfect but
they build OK but do leave you to figure some bits out yourself. None of
this handholding US kit instructions. Do fit two aileron servos or at least
upgrade the torque rods. My 163 came with the same torque rods as my Speed
600 Easy Street. Would you trust the same rods to a 60 sized aircraft?

Teriffic isn't he? I truly think he is the best pilot there has _ever_
been, including the legendary Hanno Prettner. A friend is now building his
Alliance to fly in national competitions and following a Glens CAP an
Alliance will also be a project of mine. I suspect that much of the answer
is lots of practice, lots of natural ability, plus talent as a designer. If
you look at the Majestic it is a clean craft and has a sub 15oz wing load in
his case making it light and so has almost no inertia. There is lots to be
said for having a plane which is completely neutrally stable, which I am
sure is the only condition where this kind of flying can be achieved. I fly
(currently) so that to hold inverted flight needs a little down trim. My
friend building the Alliance flies so that flying inverted needs no trim at
all. If the plane will stay in the attitude you want at all times that
certainly helps. You do have to be careful though, because a couple of mm
further (yes it is that little - 2mm affected the flying of a Loaded Dice so
much it was lucky to return in one piece) and the plane will become
uncontrollable. It's a fine line, best left to the experts (I'll let you
know if I ever achieve expert status!)

Nice guy. It is some consolation though that his models are not perfect.
His 1998 Majestic has two open holes on the bottom where he took flap servos
out and did not bother to cover the holes. Plus the paint on his belly pan
chipped. Even the very best are not 100% perfect. Mind you I really would
like to fly his Extra 330! Okay I'd like to fly all his planes (all of
them). Imagine having him as your instructor down the field on a Sunday!
Probably wouldn't solo you until you could do three rolling loops (downwind,
with a sick engine and a stripped aileron servo). Simply the best...

Humbling it is I have tried to perform various manoeuvres in the past like
10 foot knife pasts and spinning down to 15 feet but.. flying between
manoeuvres at a roll rate of 'bloody quick', knife edge at walking pace and
all the rest well practice makes perfect I just need 15 years and no F& M.
Oh and maybe natural ability.

Hold on there, lads ! What's with all this abject adulation and creepy
crawling ?!? All it takes is thousands and thousands of litres of fuel, a
gazillion minutes of flying/building/repairing/modifying time etc etc etc, a
will to do it and the bucks - a little more natural talent than the next guy
........... !!!!!

I get a great deal of pleasure watching Bekkum or Makalister float a high
cross into the area but I also enjoyed equally (or even more perhaps)
cheering on my grandson's under-7's side this morning ...... even though
they lost 2 - 1 to an 8 year old team.

I say, just watch CPR (well spotted, John!) and others like him - and there
ARE others like him - enjoy the show - and then go back and enjoy your own
brand of club flying - or whatever !

Pull up the ladder, Jack, I'm fireproof ! Malcolm

Well, I guess it must depend on what you're looking for.

I went on the Sunday, and to me, this year's Sandown was the worst ever,
and probably the last one I'll bother attending. The flying was boring
(seen it all before), and there were no large models or turbines. Even
the famous lunchtime speed-fest with the Weston Tigersharks and Magnums
had been tamed down for safety reasons. Bob Johnson wasn't there to show
us what helis can do, and even CPLR can't prop up the show on his own.

The traders in general seemed more interested in talking to visitors
than selling goods, and most stands were severely under-manned. Two
traders in particular lost out on £400-500 impulse puchases from me.

The first, for a YS140 for the Flair Sukhoi that I'd bought (superb, and
my only aircraft purchase), when a certain person famous for F3A
building was more interested in chatting (not about modelling) to
another visitor for 10 minutes than giving me a price and selling an
engine. The second was when I spotted a HotSpot turbine model on a stand
and decided it would do for this year as a second jet model. Even though
I know the owner, and started to talk to him about it, he just started
serving another guy who wanted a Twin-Jet. I walked away!

If you're fairly new to this hobby, then Sandown might be useful, but
personally I think I'll stick to mail order for my needs in future.

Colin my friend, Please get out of your pit and stop moaning. Sandown is
never all things to all men, Thats why we have many different shows to enjoy
thoughout the calender year. Sandownd firstly is/was a trade show and you
never expect to see Top flying LMA type stuff on display. I guess you can
outfly CPLR ?

We all flock to Sandown to enjoy a good old spend-up out of the wife's reach
and duly arrive home way after she's gone to bed so as to smuggle all the
ill gotten goods into the workshop. I guess you have no such challenges in
your life ( too much money to throw about)

I too went on Sunday and witnessed many crowds of people parting with there
cash for "something fo the weekend" and if you felt a little left out, it
was your own misserable attitude and no one elses.

Perhaps thats why no one has bothered to return your post, might I suggest a
couple of Viagra tabs ..... perhaps not, you might end up choking on them
and get a Stiff Neck. Oh well, whats new?

Zippy,

I didn't post my message to elicit any response, but to put across a
different view. A view, I hasten to add, that seems to be shared by an
awful lot of other flyers that I know from 4 different clubs that I
belong to.

I'm glad you were happy with the show, but maybe in another 13 years of
identical shows you might not feel the same way, and might feel the need
to see a little progress. Or maybe not in your case! You might also like
to take into account the fact that this year was promised to be a show,
that, with the new runway, WOULD feature some larger models and jets.

On your other points, no, I can't outfly CPLR (started this hobby too
late to have any chance), but I can come pretty close to most of the
other flying that I saw that Sunday, and I don't think that should be
the case. I also don't have to sneak back with my purchases as my
girlfriend always comes with me to help carry things home!

I work bloody hard running three companies, and as a result, yes, I can
buy just about anything I want. I'm sorry that galls you so badly, but
maybe you should try doing the same. Wallet envy is a terrible thing.

As to Viagra, from what I've heard, I'll certainly be taking it when I'm
70 or 80 or beyond. Till then I don't need any help in that department
thank you :-).

Maybe it's you that needs to lighten up and remember one thing, and
that's that even trade shows don't have to cater solely for the lowest
common denominator.

Here mate, who you calling Common?:-{ My vote is just as good as yours!!!
Bet your a bloody Tory, right?

I know that Sandown has declined over the years but then so has every show
that I have attended on an annual basis since 1988. Maybe it's just a case
of 'knowing what to expect' so that the anticipation ruins it all as time
goes on. Yes, I do get bored with the same old routine demos of old worn out
crap! But Sandown was/is never going to be a premier flying event and only
gullable people would be lead to think any different. READ: No fancy runway
and no big stuff o.k

I too run a small business and enjoy the fruits of my labour in the form of
my hobby, and like yourself can enjoy what ever I wish, whenever I wish. I'm
sorry you did'nt find the 'wife gag' amusing, your smug reply confirms my
thoughts on your attitude.
I certainly do not envy YOUR spending power, please enjoy it while you can
as you cant take it with you. You've probably got less time than myself
anyway. 3 companys eh? All that STRESS/GREED tut, tut, and 4 model clubs?
When do you fit it all in? I know, when all your 'faithfull' employees are
aparentley beavering away (actually, trying to rip-off your company/s while
your backs turned), you go flying etc!! Beware my friend, nobody likes a
pompous miserable old git for a boss! especially one who throws his wealth
around and sneers at the less fortunate!

I thoroughly enjoy my hobby and all those that I meet therin and never get
hung up about anything, only one thing I hate..... Poeple who like to
elevate themselves to such a height that they become somehow alienated from
the world around them and when nobody pays any attention to them they get
all upset and start sulking, tearing everybody and everything down. Sound
like anyone you know?

What a wonderfull world!!!!!!!

Happy Flying (while you've still got time!!!!)

Too right I am. Fortunately, so is Tony Blair, so we at least have some
chance till the real Tories get back in power (8-12 years by my guess).
Why do I get the impression that you're a Labour supporter??

I do neither, and my staff all share in the success of the companies.
When it's busy we work like lunatics, and when it's quiet we play (go
flying in my case). Unlike you, I truly don't begrudge other people
their success! If YOU really didn't, you wouldn't have made the comments
that you did.

Only someone who hasn't worked out what his 'handle' is yet (zippy,
tear-arse, tear-ass?), and seems more intent on criticising other people
rather than using the NG positively. After all, if no one complains
about the decline of the likes of Sandown (and I have), then why the
hell are the organisers going to do anything about it?
