Steve,
Only found two James Child's and BOTH are unlikely candidates...
First was a Harvard lecturer. Second was WWI pilot in training Corps.
Take your pick mate. Either English tuition or flying badly, choice is
yours...

I got similar results Jim, but then I thought. Is it -

The "James Child" memorial Shield,

or is it

"The James" child memorial shield

In which case I found this although I doubt its related:

I think it is the James Child flying ace who died in 1918 and had 18 confirmed
kills in 1917 winning him amongst others the mIlitary cross.

World war 1 pilot and flew the single winged and by-planes against the germans
over belgium.

search ask jeeves and go to bottom until you see england.

FOUND IT !
He was a famous gay activist from the late 1800's and died in 1901
mysteriously, whilst wearing rubber pants.
I'd suggest not wearing the badge if at all possible Steve, you might get
funny looks.

Only joking.
I'd say the pilot, although his training obviously wasn't that good if the
wearer of the badge was airborne whilst losing it !!! Craaaaaaaaaaaaaaash
