I used to have one of these, so if you have any specific questions, I will
try to remember. My main advise would be if you are a newcomer, see if you
like detecting by using the Micronta, if you do, sell it and buy a better
detector.

I have got a micronta 3003 detector bought in a tandy shop. It looks very
similar at yours.
There are three 9volts batteries. one is used for the audio part (B1) and
others for a symetric power supply (B2). You can check batteries level with
"TEST" knob on B1 or B2 position looking the needle inside the green "BATT"
in the meter ." Nor" position is for normal use.
The "volume" potentiometer drive the audio gain and put the detector on or
off.
The "MODE" switch pos TR1 and TR2 (trash reject) are used with
"discriminator" potentiometer . There are two levels for ferous rejection,
with discriminator you will reject more or less undesirable hiden parts like
bottle cap ,nails ....
The "MODE" switch in VLF (very low frequency 1.6khz) position is used with
"GROUND" knob to decrease the ground effect wich can cause wrong signal
detection due to ground composition like salt on beach sand.
The "TUNE" potentiometer is used to adjust transmitter and receiver part .
For this push the red auto tune button ,put the coil head away from metal
parts and turn the tune knob until needle is on zero position, then release
red button. The speaker should not sound.
The "sensitivity" potentiometer drive the receiving coil gain. adjust it to
middle.
The speaker sounds when something is detected and the meter indicates if it
is ferous or not (copper , gold ... )
I modify my detector to make a different sound for ferrous or non ferrous
detection.
I have got the schematic for the micronta 3003, if you have it for the 4003
i would like to compare them.
I have got the owner's manual too but it is in french ,german and an other
strange laguange, but if you are interested on ...
I hope this will help you using it

If you go to the Radioshack website you will find operating instructions for
their detector - the latest model is the same as the 4003 but with an s stem.
They are not the easiest to use, but once you get the hang of setting it up it
does a reasonable job for the price.
I picked mine up for a few quid second hand, each time I go over a site I keep
finding more stuff - learn to set the thing up and listen for those faint
signals.
Good luck
