Stolen from alt.autos.toyota:

When I first read this I laughed so hard the tears ran down my
leg... (The caps aren't mine)

BOUGHT A NEW LEXUS RX400H, AND RETURNED TO THE DEALER THE NEXT DAY
COMPLAINING THAT I COULDN'T FIGURE OUT HOW THE RADIO WORKED. THE
SALESMAN EXPLAINED THAT THE RADIO WAS VOICE ACTIVATED AND THEN HE
SAID " NELSON." THE RADIO REPLIED, "RICKEY OR WILLIE?" "WILLIE" HE
CONTINUED AND "ON THE ROAD AGAIN" CAME FROM THE SPEAKERS.
I DROVE AWAY HAPPY AND FOR THE NEXT FEW DAYS EVERY TIME I WOULD SAY
"BEETHOVEN" I'D GET BEAUTIFUL CLASSICAL MUSIC, AND IF I SAID "
BEATLES" I'D GET ONE OF THEIR AWESOME SONGS.
ONE DAY A COUPLE RAN A RED LIGHT AND NEARLY CREAMED MY NEW CAR, BUT
I SWERVED IN TIME TO AVOID THEM. ''ASSHOLES!!'' I YELLED.

THE FRENCH NATIONAL ANTHEM BEGAN TO PLAY, SUNG BY JANE FONDA AND
MICHAEL MOORE, BACKED UP BY JOHN KERRY ON GUITAR, AL GORE ON DRUMS
AND BILL CLINTON ON SAX---
DAMN, I LOVE THIS CAR

To quote (http://www.cartalk.com/content/columns/Archive/1992/July/10.html)

"Ray: We suspect that the root of Lexus is Latin. And we traced it back to
one of two possible roots. One is Latin for "half-price Mercedes." And the
other, roughly translated, means "Japanese Buick." My guess is it's probably
the former.

Tom: Also, sticking with Latin, we see two possible declensions. There's the
"opus" model, of which the plural is "opera." So if we follow that rule, the
plural of Lexus would be Lexera. One Lexus, two Lexera.

Ray: More likely, Lexus follows the same rule as Taurus, which pluralizes as
Tauri. So we'd have one Lexus, and two Lexi. Personally, I think that sounds
classier. "

However, even less likely - the possibility that it derives from Greek (as
in Octopus) in which case you could make out a good argument for the plural
being Lexopodes.

Frankly, I'm a little surprised the comments have taken this turn. For me,
the most outrageous thing about the original post is the extreme
conservative (and anti-French) attitude it adopts.

Still, this is not a political newsgroup, is it? On the other hand it does
seem to be turning into a grammar-correcting newsgroup. :-)

John.

Quite. It is also very merkin (remember the cheese eating surrender
monkeys?). Who in the UK yells, "assholes" at another driver? I can
think of a lot of other words to yell but "assholes" isn't very UK-ish.

How about "bloody hell" from the driver and James Blunt starts playing
"She's Beautiful" and the driver the rams his car into the nearest
obstacle to stop his whining? :)

I was just playing with words, John. I didn't know about the bit you
quoted and which I have snipped.

I'd go along with Michael Moore and Jane Fonda as being in the
proctological caterogy, but what have Al Gore and President Clinton
done to deserve this?

Gore's only crime is to have had an election stolen from him by the
great Texan genius and Clinton's is to have run the economy well.

It was a merkin joke that didn't translate well.

'Cheese-eating surrender monkeys' isn't of American origin (even if
the sentiment is). It's a quote from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
AFAIK, the Pythons originated the phrase.

Interesting that the merkins appropriated it then?

From our perspective, I guess they have done very little, but if you spend
any time in alt.autos.toyota (I started visiting there when I wanted to know
more about the Prius) you will find that the majority of posts from our
allies across the Atlantic are vitriolic "anti-liberal" (which means anyone
who isn't a Republican and a Neo-conservative.). They seem to hate
"Clintoon" and any other Democrat. Oh and they are virtually all
single-minded anti-Darwinists. And they want to nuke Iran.

It is quite an education to look in there occasionally.

John.

I should add that this has not been my experience of Americans generally
elsewhere on the net, or actually in their country. (Although I was quite
careful to avoid discussing politics when I was there).

But about right for the Neo-Nazi er, sorry, conservative lunatics and those
that infest the interweb thingy. Not an interesting or original thought
between them, the best they manage is to endlessly spout re-hashes of the
garbage from their beloved leaders.

I always chuckle at the description of the Merkin political system as
described by a foreigner.

On the one hand there is a right-wing, gung-ho, intolerant political party
and on the other you have the Republicans.

Quite. Heinlein saw his country very clearly. The fundamental issue
there is the influence of religion on their politics. The rise of
Nehemiah Scudder (albeit perhaps by a different name) becomes more
plausible day by day.

Peter.
