What do you intend to use it for?

My question still stands. Are you travelling on the roads, walking across
country on footpaths, sailing the rivers and canals, or flying an aeroplane?
Do you want an instrument that will give you directions or merely an
electronic map to display your journey? Unless you tell us what you intend
to use it for we can't help.

Cliff.

In that case almost any car satnav will perform the basic functions you
want. It's just a question of how big a screen you want to pay for and how
many superfluous bells and whistles you find desirable. The only rider I
would add is to be certain that map updates are free, or at least included
in the price. Not too long ago such updates were almost as expensive as the
instrument.

Good point: a satnav needs to speak to you to be safe. (Looking at the
screen is too distracting except for glance to check, e.g. shape of upcoming
junction and hence lane sequence to take.)

Thus having either a clear loudspeaker that can compete with noise and/or
passengers in vehicle, or plug into the sound system, could be important...

Nor do I! It was only the noise aspect that made me think...

If you want good traffic information and routing around problems, the
TomTom Go Live series is best - uses a number of different sources
including the Highway Agency.

I am in the same boat as you, have free GPS software on my iPhone but its
very limited and I have been toying with the idea of getting a dedicated Sat
Nav for some time. In the end I went for one of these
http://tinyurl.com/nw4jzy9 with free lifetime map updates! A decent basic
GPS.
