I've got a cutting of a bush which is also growing in Greenwich Park
Its sort of like a huge privet but with softer leaves.
The older leaves are a darker green. It has a gnarled twisted trunk and
grows there up to about 20ft

Can someone tell me what it is ?

It looks like E. japonicus to me, we've got a fair number of them
round our gardens. I would guess they were quite popular about 40 or
50 years ago judging by ours.
