Hi everyone,

I have inherited a garden with a mature Apple tree.

1/ It seems to have woolly aphid. What is the best product to use.

2/ There are some fruit bearing branches which are so high and miss shaped I
would like to prune in Autumn. Is this a bad idea ,as they seem to have more
fruit than the rest of the tree.

3/ What is the best way to ensure a good crop of apples other than a good
prune in Autumn.
maybe feeding??

4/ There is bare earth around the tree at the base. What would be a good
plant to underplant with.

I like the idea of a clematis but I dont want anything too rampant or
obvious. Any suggestions??

5/ Someone told me that Quince was a good plant to grow with an Apple tree.
Is this so , and why??

I look forward to getting lots of exciting ideas.

Regards
Ros

Hi

We can't answer all your questions but we know about woolly aphids. The
traditional method is to apply a winter wash to the tree. A winter wash
refers to painting the tree with tar oil. You can buy this as a proprietry
product from most garden centres (ask the staff if in doubt) you can
definately get it in Homebase. This product is toxic and must be applied
with care and only when the tree has no leaves at all.
The Winter wash kills the aphid eggs which have been laid in the Autumn.
Once Woolly aphid is established on a tree it is very difficult to get rid
of it completely so persistence is necessary. If possible prune out
infested branches and burn them. To prevent further damage to the tree you
need to treat the wounds where the tree has been pruned with arbex(a sealing
wax) or a similar product.

Go ahead and prune the apple tree in the Autumn as you get the fruit on new
wood which is produced from Spring onwards. Good cropping comes with good
pruning aswell as feeding.
Good Luck
