For those who can get BBC2 Scotland (Sky and FreeSat can; don't know
about Virgin as there are none round here to ask) Beechgrove starts
tonight at 7.30pm.

It will then be repeated on BBC2 nationally (including BBC2HD) on
Sunday at 9.30am.

eh? we've all been watching it for several years now Granity and
frequently have urged others to watch it.

Unfortunately it has now been 'nationalised' and instead of the four
unassuming, expert gardeners who used to be the presenters and did a
really good down to earth job, we now have 'personalities charging
around 'helping' people in their gardens. No doubt they'll show him
jumping over stiles and gates or winging his way around in a helicopter etc.

Always liked Beechgrove up till now, will still enjoy the other bits IF
and only if they don't try to 'gardeners-world' it all.

Broadly speaking, Janet, I agree with you. I *hate* jazzed up, hyped
up, "cool" gardening shows. However, it is just possible that, now
B'grove has become a national programme, the producers are bound to want
some national content to keep their new viewers happy. It is also
possible that the original four presenters don't want to take on those
'travel and trowel' jobs away from their home territory.

I have missed the first prog, but will catch up with it soon and then
offer my opinion. I'm certainly not going to consign it to the compost
heap yet. The original is so earthy, helpful and inspiring that I
shan't give up without a fight.

I do hope you are able to enjoy it.

ah but the presenters did travel around but gave good sound advice about
sensible predicaments like trying to solve front garden dilemmas on a
new estate and even helped schools build gardens. They did mainly travel
around Scotland but then they didn't try and convince the owners to
plant Phormiums etc.

I can't see why they have to nationalise it, why not (now here's a good
idea)copy them and do a similar programme from England and Wales.

Agreed. Refreshingly down to earth and informative. Gardening doesn't
need celebs; in fact, they detract from it. The camera should be on the
plants, landscape or, as required, on the hands of the presenter if a
technique is being demonstrated.

I want a gardening programme that inspires me to get out in the garden.
Celebs that 'sell' gardening have the same effect as shop assistants
who try to sell me something: they just make me walk out. A genuine,
expert gardener (self-taught is as good as certificated to me) whose
down-to-earth enthusiasm glows from within and who inspires by example
is just what we want. To some extent, Monty Don does that, but I still
think that Toby Buckland, *left to his own devices*, could have filled
that gap that St. Geoff vacated.

I have the "Geoff Hamilton Collection" on DVD, comprising the three
"standalone" series he did - Ornamental Kitchen Garden, Cottage
Gardens and Paradise Gardens (completed posthumously). I watch them
fairly frequently.

So what's all the fuss, a bunch of foreigners talking from the frozen
North of the UK.
The format was OK, but would be better if it was kept as a regional
Prog, and each region of the UK followed suit.
If the Beeb can manage regional news and weather then why not regional
Gardening, I suppose they will argue that making a Prog for the few
gardeners in Wales where the majority in the west of the country still
grow mainly Veg wouldn't be worth the cost.

When I watch a re-run of old gardening programmes such as Geoff
Hamilton's I find they have a certain 'quaint naivety', having watched
Beechgrove this morning I found it has the same 'quaint naivety' which I
enjoyed. Over all quite a good programme and providing the production
team don't get delusions of grandeur it should stay that way.






It just lacks a Nigel or a Sylvie. :-) :-)

I know that using last-minute bids is a popular tactic, but it is
not the only way.

All you need to do is decide what your maximum bid is to be, and
declare that. ebay then bids automatically (if needed) until your
limit is reached.

The advantages are that you don't need to be glued to your screen
as the auction closing time approaches, and you are not tempted
to increase the bid beyond your predetermined limit.

It came with a very rough throat for which I gargled with soluble
aspirin as they are an anaesthetic, but found that the original Bechams
powders are even better as a gargle.

Thank you, David. This is my third cold and second chest infection this
year, so I'm really fed up. I missed my Hypochondriacs Anonymous
meeting last month, so you can imagine how rough I feel. Seeing the Doc
tomorrow for antibiotics, but I can't have Penicillin any more so it
should be interesting. I think I'll try the Beechams gargle (my
throat's raw now), but I'm wary of aspirin due to my asthsma. Thanks
for the suggestion. Hope you're feeling a lot better now.

We've got cloud and occasional rain atm, although it's 9*C outside,
which is an improvement on last month.

I'd been coughing non-stop night and day for a week until sheer
exhaustion forced me to the gp's surgery. I got prescribed a week's
erethromycin, which has actually made the coughing more painful, but I
now feel there's an end in sight as the airways are clearing. Obviously
what starts as a virus can turn into a bacterial infection, so
antibiotics are always worth a try

you'll soon be bouncing around in the garden. I can hardly wait to
reach that state myself, since sleep deprivation (as with you) has
compounded the misery.

That may be where you usually lurk but, in this group, we indulge in
constructive appreciation or criticism. Irrespective of the
"sexual chocolate". garden makeovers are generally an acquired taste!

And we don't refer to females as "babe".

If it's the flu people round here got since Christmas (strangely not
catching apparently as random people caught it - even me! It was called
90 day flu by one of the doctors and it blinking well is! You feel okay
after about a week or so but then when you try and do anything you feel
clapped out .....................

I'm pleased to say it's not flu. I am very prone to chest infections
and they do make me feel ill and cream-crackered for two or three weeks.
I only had flu once, but I would recognise it if I had it again. What
I've got is bad enough:~(. Off to the Doc's tomorrow.
