You need to get them in the ground ASAP though you're right, now is
not the time.
Splitting the crowns is the normal way to propagate rhubarb so no
problem there.
But they need to go in the right way up. you should be able to see
where the stalks were attached to the crowns. Obviously this is the
top.
I split my rhubarb in June. Exactly the wrong time of year to do it
according to the books. It also spoke about the roots being delicate!
I just severed the crown into three with a spade and planted all three
pieces immediately in well composted soil. They looked miserable for a
week or so but since then have put on lots of new growth and look truly
invigorated and healthy! Can't really mistake which way to plant them -
roots downwards! LOL. It was really hot dry weather when I split the
plant and I think that giving them a regular watering after splitting
helped them to settle in. All three plants look almost ready to harvest
some stems off already, though I'll probably wait until next year now.
