I always thought that wood lice did no harm and only ate dead material
. On seeing wood lice killer on sale at the garden centre , perhaps i am
wrong .Also how in the world could they target it to only kill wood
lice ?
Can anyone put me straight ?

You are right in thinking that woodlice eat dead wood,
Unfortunately they also enjoy a range of seedlings and young shoots, looks
as if they enjoy a bit of side salad with their logs.

Given that they are closely related to trilobites, and are among the most

have heard that they spread fungus, but then fungii are interesting.

Generally they don't do much harm only as David said on some delicate
seedlings, sometimes. As for the woodlice killers - well it's been a long
time since I looked at any of those but they used to be broad spectrum
insecticides ie. kill anything including beneficial insects, nothing is as
far as I know specific to woodlice.

Not necessarily. Some people seem to want to kill anything that crawls.

They can't. What they mean is it *will* kill wwoodlice, not that it
won't kill anything else.

They seem fond of my strawberries - but death penalty not required for this
crime, they * are* delicious and they obviosly want some pud after a good
meal of rotting wood. (who wouldn't)

It seems to me that the inside of our local garden centre is quite similar
to the household cleaning isle in a supermarket . Sprays for this
,disinfectants for that , cloths impregnated with antibacterial god knows
what .I think society is getting more and more paranoid about germs with
every new and unnecessary product that comes out . Looks like the inside of
my local B&Q is going the same way ,i think it is bad to line up all these
different incecticides when one type will probably kill most things anyway,
and people seeing a huge bottle with Wood lice Killer ,written on it in
bold letters will then think that a wood lice is an evil creature that must
be exterminated otherwise they would not sell stuff to kill them . In
another generation people will think you have to use these things and faint
at the sight of a creepie crawley ( if there are any left )I must admit it
do use slug pellets and i feel very guilty about it but i refuse to use much
else .

Apparently they taste vaguely of shrimp when cooked, according to
that 'Wild Food' chappy with the posh surname. I am perfectly happy
to accept this fact unverified by myself. Even I have some standards.

P.S he did an omelette with them.
