The house we recently have moved into has a hedge along the front boundary
which appears to be mostly Berberris and Hawthorn. Unfortunately it looks
like it has been neglected for a while and is now a bit out of hand. Will I
be OK to trim approx 1-2 feet off the top of this to get it back to the
correct height. Also is there any way of encouraging grpwth in the areas
where it is a bit thin.

Many Thanks

Jim

No problem - it will help it thicken out too. Wear leather gloves and
goggles and pick up your clippings if you have pets, children or a
wheelbarrow with inflatable tyre as they have lethal spikes.

Yes cut it back whenever you like, both of these are tough enough to
cope with being cut now if you want. Cut it below where you want it's
final height by at least six inches and let it grow back to that level,
otherwise your hedge trimmers will be continually hitting the thick
branches when you trim.

While you are cuttign pull out any dead wood right back as far as it
goes. This lets light and air and water into the hedge promoting new
growth - may help your bare patches. Bare patches may also be caused by
lack of light, so trim back overhanging branches if there are any. Also
the hedge should eb wider at the bottom than at the top, this 'batter'
means that light can reach the base fo the hedge and help it to leaf up
at the base.

Many thanks to you all.
Looks like I've got another job for the weekend, just need to pluck up the
courage to tacke the 'hypodermics' on the Berberis
