Hi Iris. This is the second time the offensive ng spam issue has
been raised this week. Like others, I have a newsreader which
automatically deletes it. By re-quoting the text you succeeded where
the spammer failed, and sent it to those of us who had not previously
seen it. For those who had already seen it,you also gave the spammer
double coverage of his sex advert.

Another time could you please edit such messages of yours in a way
which avoids compounding the spammer's work? It would be much appreciated.

I'm agreeing with you here... but...

Just an observation, and no offence intended, but by replying directly
without editing the offending url out, you've just done exactly the same.
The search robots pick up on urls posted in newsgroups, so PLEASE if you're
posting that you've reported the spammer to SpamCop or whoever, SNIP THE
URL!

Reported to SpamCop also. Have a nice day everyone.

I think I'd rather have spam than not be able to send to people using
certain ISPs. I'm having difficulty in sending e-mail via Demon to people
using skynet.be because they are registered with an organisation called
orbs.com. They bounce all e-mails coming from ISPs that are not registered
with Orbs and have a history of propagating spam. Since some of these are
business e-mails I get rather cross!

As someone who administers an ISPs mail system I can say that the
ORBS system is a wonderfully helpful tool, which is run for the
benifit of the Internet community for no profit.
Put pressure on your business contacts to either pressure their ISPs
to act responsibly or change ISP. If those ISPs who dont take
spamming seriously start losing business then maybe they will act.

Are we saying that Demon propagate spam or just haven't registered with
ORBS?, if its the latter why should they? there seem to be an increasing
number of ISP's wanting to provide an extra 'service' for the community
as a whole, surely the result of that is a fragmented system that will
consist of lots of self serving intranets.

Janet,

If by reporting this pornographic spam I gave you offence, then I am sorry.
I was anxious to ensure that they were reported asap. As it happens it was
new porn spam and SpamCop will deal with them.
To me it is far more important to get rid of these people than my small
error or accidentally repeating their message.
It seems a great pity that you have to criticise someone who, yes made a
mistake, but is merely trying to do good in the long run.

Of course; nobody disputes that.I was discussing your follow up to urg.

An "I've reported this" message to urg plays what role in getting
rid of them ?

Sauce for the goose, Iris. I did exactly the same as you; took
steps to prevent repetition of a kind of post which is unwelcome to
myself and others. I don't think anyone could have construed my
courteous explanation and request as criticism of you? Anyone can
make a mistake and learn from it; as I did in the same thread. I was
not in the least offended to have my own quoting mistake corrected.

Too bad about losing the urg brownie badge for public service, innit :~}

What a sad world when we are unable to do 'something for nothing'.

Brownies, you can have the points for the posting I gave about the

They haven't registered with Orbs and every time someone complains about
spam which originated through a Demon server then the server in question is
blacklisted with Orbs. Seems that Demon have just let the situation build
up until most of their servers were blacklisted. This means that innocent
people like me can't get my e-mails through to Orbs-registered ISPs.

For non-techie people like myself it took a determined effort on my part to
find out just what was happening since Demon wouldn't admit to anything
being wrong. Indeed, they told me to take it up with Skynet.be - but didn't
give me an address to write to and the phone number they gave me was wrong.

I agree with you when you ask why they should register. But the fact
remains that Orbs is there to cut down on spam and Demon have to go along
with it or their customers run the risk of having their e-mails bounced
back. I must say that the way Demon have handled this problem makes them go
down in my estimation. Now that I've reported which servers were
blacklisted I seem to be able to get my mails through. But I resent the
amount of time I've had to spend on it finding out what was wrong.

Apparently by blacklisting the server rather than doing anything to the
anonymous person who sent the spam in the first place!

Reply in e-mail. Suffice it to say here that the fault appears to have lain
with Demon. Most of their servers seem to have been on the Orbs blacklist
during the last couple of weeks or so but they wouldn't admit it to me.
That's why I was doing a passable imitation of the Ouslem bird (ever seen
one, Andy?) trying to find out just *why* my mails were being bounced back
from Skynet!

But Iris! Janet merely pointed out very politely that in your attempts
to get the spam stopped you had inadvertantly broadcast it to some of us
who had been free of it the first time around - how do we learn from
mistakes if no-one points them out?

Just to go back to the original issue of spam, if you receive loads of
personal spam visit www.spamcop.net its a free service that works out where
your spam has come from and sends out a report / complaint on your behalf. I
have been using it for a few months now and it seems to work.

*runs and hides so the heated debate may resume*
